Hi All...
I just evaluated here on my Windows XP Professional Web IDE the new release of Windows Commander and I rated it the maximum here for a fine piece of software: 5 butterflies. Using this magnificent tool I solved in few minutes an absurd problem created here by Windows Millennium. Windows Commander is the best file manager currently available for Windows platform!! Quickly, smooth and absolutely guaranteed Windows Commander repaired only in my principal website 11,202 files in just 40 seconds!! Changes in this new release of Windows Commander includes : XP themes support, Background transfer manager, SOCKS4/5 proxy support.

Windows Commander (one of the best File Managers/FTP client and much more... around!) is not only a simple Explorer replacement for Windows. It is the 32 bit version for Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, and XP that can solves all problems you can encounter everyday working with a PC. A 16 bit version is also available as wc16v500.zip. Developed by the genius Swiss programmer Christian Ghisler, ASP member, Windows Commander have an interface that remember Norton Commander, but is a super-modern tool for professional and all users, with a fantastic lot of add-ons. When I migrated my Web IDE from OS/2 Warp to Windows 2000, in order to use modern web development tools, as Namo Web Editor, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Allaire Home Site - all of them unavailable for OS/2 environment -, I encountered a serious problem: where is a decent file manager for Windows, decent and efficient like dozens you can use on Warp? Fortunately at that year (1999) I was member of Boxer Text Editor Mailing List, invited by the developer, David Hamel. I posted my problem at that List and a member suggest me Windows Commander. I tested it and verified that this one is really the best-in-show in the universe of all file managers. I suggest t that you download the newest version, 5.0, an verifies for yourself. Windows Commander Version 5.00 (wc32v500.exe, 1.35MB) was released on 2002-03-04 and have 177,374 downloads since 03/04/2002 trough today May 06th, 2002. The developer's website is one of the most visited in all the world (over 6,5 million visitors since December 1996).

To install Windows Commander just click the downloaded .exe file in a /temp directory and that is all!! You will be asked about simple questions, as the desired location for the program. Windows Commander installs on Windows XP Pro in few seconds without any problem. I installed it on NTFS environment and it is running just fine since the first second of his existence here!!

I evaluated the new release on my Windows XP Professional Web IDE and during this evaluation I solved in few minutes a terrible problem created in over 70 websites that I am managing here at this time, The problem was created by Windows Millennium, the default operating system distributed by Compaq with Presario 5004LB, the machine used by my default Web IDE. Windows ME transformed thousands and thousands and thousands of files from lower & upper case to upper case for all of them!! Yeah, man, if you want to crazy join Windows NME and see for yourself what this trash will make on your PC!! In OS/2 exist several tools to solve this problem: with a simple click or with an enter on a short command on Warp console prompt you transforms upper case in lower case in entire directories in few seconds! One of most famous of these tools is a little converter developed by another genius of programmer's world, Mark Kimes, creator of FM/2 File Manager, the stat of art for all files managers in all the world, an authentic jewel reserved for OS/2 users only. Now, users have Windows Commander with Multi-Rename Tool for all Windows environment, including the deceased and buried (but still used!!) Windows 16 bits (just de Windows that OS/2 emulates in his WinOS2), in order to solve ALL conversions, including upper case to lower case etc. Windows Commander can do this in three steps: 1. Copy the files to the new location (optional)
2. Press Ctrl+B to see all files also in subdirs
3. Now use the multi-rename tool to change them all to lowercase

...and that is all!!

Photo above shows the Multi-Rename Tool running on my principal website

Windows Commander handles archives like subdirectories. It supports ZIP/ARJ/LHA/RAR/UC2/TAR/GZ/CAB/ACE archives, and has an internal ZIP-compatible packer. The search function allows to search for files inside archives, even for text. A command line helps starting programs with parameters, and a fully configurable button bar allows to launch programs and internal commands. The built-in viewer can show files in text, hex, binary, image and multimedia format. The 32 bit version supports Drag@Drop from and to explorer/desktop, delete to the recycle bin, and Explorer style context menus/property sheets. FTP servers on the Internet can be accessed like local drives. A configurable directory hotlist (bookmarks)and history list make directory navigation easier. The sync function allows to synchronize two complete directory trees, and the compare function shows the difference of two binary or text files highlighted side by side. The new parallel port connection works between any combination of Windows 95/98/ME,Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows 3.1 and even DOS through a separate server.

Windows Commander don't sucks much CPU or RAM. In the photo above  you can see two versions (4.0 and 5.0) running at the same time on @Macarlo's Windows XP Pro Web IDE, performing two hard backups (over 400 MB each) from a HDD to other HDD. Take a look on the Task Manager: 19 per cent total CPU usage and only 13MB of RAM used for this operation, performed in background running  mode.
