CONFIGURING AN AUTOMATIC LOGON IN WINDOWS NT
You can configure a Windows NT-based computer with the information it needs to automatically log on as a specific user rather than prompting for a user name and password. Although this can be a security risk on a work computer, you might use an automatic logon on your home computer. You configure an automatic logon by editing your computer's registry. Begin by making sure that the DefaultUserName value contains your user name (or the user name you want to use for the automatic logon). This value is stored below the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon key. Next, add the following values (replace "password" with your username's password):
     AutoAdminLogon              REG_SZ:   1
     DefaultPassword             REG_SZ:   password

If you're using Novell's Client32, you'll also need to add the following values to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NOVELL\NWGINA\Login key:
DefaultNetWareUserName        REG_SZ:    username
DefaultNetWarePassword        REG_SZ:    password
NetWareAutoAdminLogon         REG_SZ:    1

CORRECTION: USING A BATCH FILE TO CHECK FOR FILE EXISTENCE

The TechRepublic tip in Issue 28 contained an error. TechRepublic apologizes for any inconvenience. The following is the corrected tip.

You can use a batch file to check for the existence of a file and then perform a routine when it arrives. Here's a sample:
:check_for_file_existence
if exist c:\ftp\ftpfile.txt goto perform
sleep 200
goto check_for_file_existence
:perform

This routine checks for ftpfile.txt every 200 seconds. The sleep.exe program is necessary and is supplied with the Windows NT resource kit. This type of routine is very handy when you need to run a program once a file has been sent via FTP to your computer.
