Hi Folks.
I tested here the new version (2.03a) of DiskJockey file
manager just released by Clear & Simple. (The previous version was cracked
by Azrael, from Phrozen Crew; note that I condemn piracy but I inform about
this crack because it's a demonstration of the importance of this soft: Phrozen
Crew never cracks mediocre applications!). This fine release by Anthony Pereira
runs smooth, without any problem, on Windows 2000 Professional.. Tuesday October 19, 1999 I was working on my Windows
2000 Pro IDE when I received an e-mail from Anthony Pereira with the new about
DiskJockey. I downloaded this giant zip (yeah, above 12 megabytes for a file
manager!) without problems, unpacked and installed it fine on Win 2000. If you
are needing a serious file manager for your Windows 2000 and if you are a serious
man, I recommend: get this new DiskJockey and register it!

Fixes and additions
I used DiskJockey on OS/2 Warp where I worked some years in my old IDE. When I migrated to Windows NT I tested DiskJockey and encountered some problems, as you can see clicking here:
The DiskJockey 98 Test on Windows NT4 SP5
- Among the many changes were some specific updates for Windows NT users. Some users had trouble with DiskJockey "locking up" or just not operating properly under NT. After upgrading our testing center to eight systems with every version and flavor of Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and 2000 this new DiskJockey build is the most stable ever -saids Anthony Pereira.
Now, fixed, DiskJockey runs fine. Is it the Ultimate File Manager?
- We sure think so. With viewers for over 230 file formats,
extensible to even more with additional Internet Explorer plug-ins; built-in,
easy to use zip tools and a clear and simple file management interface, DiskJockey
can't be beat. - saids the developer.

Display Folder Size in File list (instead of 0).
Improved HTML Viewers (greatly improved) - uses built-in Internet
Explorer code.
Views animated gifs.
Option to view any file through an Internet Explorer plugin.
This
provides our customers with the ability to improve the view of some
file types (the plugins are usually provided by the developer of the
file type) - Adobe Acrobat files are an excellent example of this.
If you have an MP3 plugin for Internet Explorer installed DJ will
send that file to the plugin and play it, selecting the next file
will interrupt the play and play the next - great for identifying
MP3 files.
Mini-Web Browser built-into DJ View window.
Added a Go to Clear-simple.com web site button in the About DJ dialog.
About DiskJockey Operations
DiskJockey is a very powerful file manager. Click on
a folder and DJ
lists the contents in the file list. Click on a file and DJ views
the file! Swipe sections of the view and click mouse button 2 in the
view panel to copy the text or graphic file to the clipboard. You
may also print, rotate graphics, or convert graphic files to another
bitmap format. In addition, DJ is also a Zip and Unzip utility for
PKZIP format files and also features a Jukebox for playing multimedia
files such as WAV, MIDI, and AVI file types.
Lastly, DJ has the facility to be a mini-browser for the Internet
-
type in a URL address in the status line entry field and press Enter.
If you are connected to the Internet DJ will display the web page in
the viewer screen. The browser facility was not intended, we
actually used the Window's Internet Explorer programming interface
for a good HTML file viewer, and as a bonus it also acts as a browser
and a gif Viewer (including animated gifs!).
An additional bonus of including the Windows Internet Explorer
interface in DJ is that any plug-in viewers installed for IE4 will
also operate inside DJ's IE interface. For example: Microsoft Word,
Excel, Adobe Acrobat, etc. (In some cases the IE4 viewers can be
better viewers than those native to DJ--SOME VIEWERS EVEN ALLOW
EDITING OF THE FILE).
As a file manager DJ performs all of the standard file management
functions: copy, move, delete, rename, Create folders, File Find, and
even Format diskettes. All major functions of DJ are performed in
background threads--this makes DJ responsive--you won't have to stare
at a floating icon during a long copy operation, DJ starts a worker
thread to perform a copy, move or find, and notifies you when
complete. Likewise the Zip, Unzip and Jukebox operations are
performed in background threads, instantly returning control back to
the user for additional operations. During a background thread
operation the status of the operation is displayed in the status line
at the bottom of DJ window.
Most DJ operations can be started several different ways
C O P Y - M O V E - Z I P - U
N Z I P
Press a button on the button bar or click a function on the main menu
to be prompted through a copy, move, zip or unzip operation. DJ
displays a dialog window asking for the target folder. Or, use drag
and drop to copy or move. A third way to copy or move files is to
select the file(s) or folder(s) from the file list and press the key
combination ctrl+c then select a target folder in the main folder
list and press the ctrl+v--the copy thread will begin. Use the keys
ctrl-x and ctrl-v to move selected files or folders.
The goal of DiskJockey Zip/Unzip operation is to be the easiest. To
zip a group of file - select the file(s). Press the Zip button or
the Zip menu item, and a target dialog will appear - set to the same
folder, with a default of the first file.zip as a default name.
Press the begin button in the target dialog, and the zip thread will
begin. ITS THAT SIMPLE!
To zip an entire folder select the folder from the folder tree, and
press the Zip button or menu item - again the target dialog is
displayed, with the same folder set as the target, and the folder
name.zip set as the new zip file. Click on begin and the zip
operation begins in a background thread.
When a zip file is created the resulting zip file will not
contain
folder paths when the selected files or folders are in from file
list. When a folder from the folder tree is selected to be zipped the
entire folder structure is zipped and saved in the zip file so that
an unzip will recreate the folder structure. This folder path
information is set as the default to make zipping easy and intuitive,
however these options can be overridden by selecting the Advanced
Options page in the target dialog. There are also additional pages
for creating multi-volume zip files, and password encrypted zip
files. DJ follows the PKZIP specification for zipping, so that it is
compatible with other zip programs like Pkzip, and WinZip.
When a zip file is selected the contents of the zip file is
displayed
in the viewer panel. Also the Zip bar name is changed to that file
name. Drag and drop additional files onto the Zip Bar to append
files to that last selected zip file. Use the right mouse button in
the zip view list to extract an individual file; double-click on a
filename in the zip view list and the file will be viewed in a
separate panel.

Delete files by selecting a file or group of files and then pressing
the delete button on the button bar or just press the delete key on
your keyboard. There are two delete methods, Recycle or Destroy. The
Recycle option moves a file from its current folder to the recycle
folder, where it will stay until the recycle folder reaches its
maximum size. Then the older files are deleted to make room for the
next deletion. The Destroy option immediately removes the file from
your system--instantly recovering the disk space. DJ provides a
Recycle/Destroy button at the lower right of the screen to toggle
between these two modes of deletion. DJ also lets you turn off those
annoying confirmation messages--"Are you sure you want to delete this
file?" This option is in the Preferences menu under Confirmations. Be
especially careful about turning off the Destroy Confirmation,
it is
very convenient to turn this off when cleaning up a disk drive, but
it is not forgiving--it destroys a file or folder immediately without
warning.

DJ makes creating a new folder a very simple task. First select the
new folder location--its path will be displayed in the current folder
field. Click in the current folder field with the mouse, type in your
new folder name and press enter. The new folder is created and
selected. Multiple nested sub-folders can be created all at once. For
example, to create a new folder structure named "Sales Project' with
a sub folder of "Forecast" on the C: drive first select C: from the
Folder Tree, then select the Current folder entry and after the C:\
type Sales Project\Forecast and press the Enter key. The two folders
are instantly created!
I N F O R M A T I O N a n d N A V I G A T I O N
Click on a folder and DJ displays the number of objects in the
folder, and the space used by those entries in the root of that
folder on the Info Bar just above the folder tree.
If you click on the Sub button DJ calculates the size of the entire
folder structure in those same fields. Above those fields and the
Sub button is the Current Folder/History list. The last ten folders
you selected are saved here for quick navigation.
Select the arrow and the list will be exposed--select a folder in the
drop-down list and DJ returns to the folder.
Next to this Current Folder/History list is another drop down
list
that contains information about every Volume on your system. This
list displays the drive ID, Current Free space, Total Space, % free
and Volume Type. This gives a quick look at the space available on
your system. Remember that DJ is Network aware--any drives mapped to
your system will also be displayed in this drop-down list.
As you select files DJ keeps a running total of the number
of files
selected and the total size of those selected files. Select multiple
files in the file list by holding the ctrl key and selecting each
file with the mouse. Select a group of files by selecting the first
pressing the shift key and selecting the last--all files in between
become selected. The Mark button will select all files marked. The
UnMark button toggles marked files, marking those not marked.
Use the filter drop-down entry to filter the display of certain
files
in the file list. It accepts the DOS wildcards * and ? to display the
list of files which match the filter. For example, to display files
having an extension of DOC, just select the filter drop-down and type
*.doc and press the Enter key. Or to display JPG files that begin
with M type in M*.jpg. The ? wildcard is used to replace any value
character in the name. The filter drop-down saves the last ten
entries to let you quickly filter with the most recently used filters
and return back to *.* quickly.

DJ's jukebox is for playing multimedia files in the sequence in which
the files are dropped onto it. The playing is performed in a
background thread - keeping you informed of the number of files
queued in the jukebox and the name of the currently playing file.
The Jukebox plays WAV, MIDI, RLE, and AVI file types. Just select a
file or group of files and drag and drop them onto the jukebox to
begin playing.
I N T E R N E T B R O W S I N G
DJ also provides full Internet browsing capability using Microsoft's
Internet Explorer. In order for this feature to work you must be
connected to the Internet and have Internet Explorer version 4.0 or
higher installed on your system. Then type in a URL address into the
field located on the right half of the Status line and press Enter.
The web site will be displayed in DJ's Viewer panel. Use mouse
button 2 (in the Viewer panel) to activate some of the browser
functions, like Back, Forward, Save Image File, Print, Refresh, etc.
Since most URLs are in the format "http://www.domainname.com/"
DJ can
save you some typing by automatically adding the "http://www." prefix
and the ".com" suffix when you enter only a domain name. I.E. to go
to www.microsoft.com all you need to type is Microsoft and press
Enter. If you type in the entire URL DJ will leave it alone--
likewise if you type in www.rc.net DJ will add the http:// prefix.
DJ saves every URL entry (for a session) in the combo box
so you can
easily return to a web site--just open the Combo Box and select an
entry to return to that page. The last 10 pages are saved in this
combo box between sessions of DJ. To clear the combo box - choose
menu item Edit -> Clear Lists -> Web/Pathname. To go forward or
back
use the hot keys "alt+->" or "alt+<-". Always
remember to use mouse
button 2 for differing menu options when clicking in the viewer
panel.
That's it! Not a full function browser, but useful when you
just want
to look-up a single web page--especially useful if you are always
connected to the internet through the office T1 or a cable modem.
F I L E B R O W S I N G (Using the IE interface
and Plug-ins)
Since the browser is using Microsoft's Internet Explorer any plug-ins
you have installed will work for file viewing within DiskJockey.
Select a file (e.g. a .doc file created by Microsoft Word). Notice
that the document path name is displayed in the URL location (it is
not placed in the combo box list). Move the mouse pointer to the URL
location on the status line, press the Enter key and the file will be
sent to the browser (now the path is placed into the combo box list).
Some IE plug-ins provide better and or more function than
DJs
viewers. So we added a function to allow you to automatically send
the file to the IE viewer. Select a file, and press mouse button 2
displaying the context menu. Select the "Use IE Viewer" menu
item.
Now all files of that type will be sent to the IE Viewer and the menu
item will be checked. If you decide to change this back to DJ
viewers just repeat the menu selection and the item will be
unchecked. Be aware, that if a viewer plug-in for the file type is
not installed, the IE viewer will ask you what to do with the file.
Also note that the DJ viewers are usually quicker than the IE plug-
in. Lastly, all files (and URLs) are inserted into the URL combo
box. This allows you to return to the view of a file sent to the IE
Viewer by selecting it from the URL c
ombo box located on the status
line.
There are many IE plug-ins, some of them actually start the
application inside the browser - like Microsoft Word or Excel and you
can edit the file and save! Other file viewer plug-ins might view
with additional options like zoom, etc. The viewing isn't as fast as
the DJ's built-in viewers, but it is interesting, so experiment! If
you have IE5 installed with the Real Media 2 Player - try sending
AVI, MPG, and MP3 files to the IE Viewer - it's a great way to see
and hear the file. Select one file and it begins playing, select the
next and the first is interrupted to play the second. It's the
easiest way to clean up a hard drive filled with old files!
