AOL's Steve Case
Unveils Long-Awaited Netscape 6.0

Hi Folks.
Say goodbye to Microsoft Internet Explorer, Windows users...The long-awaited
Netscape 6 has arrived! This Saturday April 08, 2000 I tested exhaustively on
my Windows 2000 Professional the Preview Release 1 (PR1) of Netscape 6. Sincerely:
Is Steve Case associated with Bill Gates as IBM execs? Yeah, man, this new Netscape
is just for Windows 2000, really!!! I' m perplexed with the high velocity that
it surfs the web! Yeah, I just replaced all browsers I have on my Windows 2000
web IDE by this new Netscape! To install Netscape 6 on my Windows 2000 Pro I
simply copied the entire directory Netscape 6 from my Windows NT4 SP6 Server
to this nice workstation; I created a shortcut for Netscape.exe in my Active
Desktop and clicked it. That is all! Netscape 6 started fine and I surfed performing
several tasks using it, including his fine FTP feature.

My Sidebar: What's Most Important to You?
My Sidebar is yours. Use it to keep your favorite or most needed information
in front.
My Sidebar can include the latest news, stocks, and weather; your Buddy List
for instant communication; or even a view of your child at day care while you
work.
My Sidebar comes with some tabs already in place, but you can customize by
choosing among hundreds of other tabs.
Easy to Customize
Click a tab to see what's under it. Since My Sidebar tabs are automatically
updated throughout the day, you always get the latest information.
Click "Customize" to make your own choices. For detailed
instructions, see Customizing Netscape 6.
Add or remove any tab as you wish. In addition to great content from Netscape,
you can get tabs from many of the most popular sites on the Web.
Cookie Manager
Cookie Manager gives you more control over your privacy.
You may want to accept cookies from familiar and trusted sites,
since cookies permit sites to provide services and personalized content. However,
you may want to refuse cookies from sites you don't know well or do not trust.
In the past you either had to refuse all cookies, or respond
to a prompt every time a site offered a cookie. Now you can designate in advance
how Netscape 6 should respond to cookies, for more convenience and fewer interruptions.
Multiple Mail Accounts & Identities
Now
you can manage all your Internet communications from one place. With Netscape's
support for multiple accounts (including AOL email accounts), you can track
your business and personal email and newsgroups, all from one window.
It's easy to set up---a wizard walks you through adding AOL, POP3, IMAP,
or NNTP (news) accounts to Netscape Mail.
Keep Business and Personal Mail Separate
Separate inboxes and folders for each email account keep your email organized.
You can send email using different "identities," so your messages
contain the return address of the account you choose.
The three-pane interface makes managing email simple---all email accounts,
folders and newsgroups appear in one pane.
Netscape Mail lets you create folders (and folders within folders) so you
can store messages exactly the way you want.

What's New For Developers?
Netscape 6 is the first browser to offer full support for XML, Cascading
Style Sheets level 1, the W3C
DOM level 1, and Resource
Description Framework.
Netscape 6 delivers the industry's best support for CSS2 positioning and
the DOM2 event model and CSS interface. JavaScript 1.5 makes it possible to create interactive
web content and rich web applications using these standards.
Because Netscape 6 offers the broadest and deepest support for web standards
of any browser, it is now possible to create web applications that are as powerful
as native applications, and have user interfaces that are just as rich. These
standards-based web applications are cross-platform and cross-device, so you
can reach a huge audience on desktop, television set top boxes, and browsing
appliances.
To make it even easier to write cross-platform, cross-device user interfaces
for desktop and web applications, Netscape 6 also supports XUL, the XML-based user interface language. XUL defines
the objects and layout of desktop applications using web standards instead of
platform-specific GUI APIs. The entire Netscape 6 user interface is defined
using XUL.
Netscape 6 possesses the best, most up-to-date support for Java, thanks to the Open JVM Interface (OJI). OJI lets
you download and use new OJI-compliant Java Virtual Machines within the browser
the moment they become available.
Netscape
Gecko, the revolutionary new browser engine, makes possible this unmatched
standards support. The browser engine is the software that retrieves content
from the Web and displays it on your screen. Netscape Gecko was written from
scratch to be small, fast, and standards compliant. Gecko is the reason Netscape
6 is dowloads more quickly, and displays pages faster and better than previous
browsers.
Netscape Gecko is embeddable, free, and open source, and has a cross-platform
architecture that makes it easily portable across platforms and devices. Gecko
is being adopted
by industry leaders to power a new generation of television set top boxes
and browsing appliances that will bring rich web browsing to millions of new
Web users worldwide.

DevEdge Online.
If you have questions, discuss them with other developers in the DevEdge Newsgroups, or visit the DevEdge Support Area.
