Hi All.
This Sunday September 26, 1999, I tested here the freeware 1st Page 2000 (web editor professional) from Evrsoft. Man, this fine release runs fantastic on Windows 2000 Pro!!! Are you looking for a web editor really cool and absolutely free? Yeah, it is 1st Page 2000. Sincerely, I recommend.

WYSIWYG editors offer a totally visual solution for authoring Web sites, but they often provide more than you bargain for, producing meaningless HTML code and extraneous snippets. 1st Page 2000 is a powerful Web site and script editor that puts you in complete control of every HTML tag, so there's never a need to tidy your code. The program includes dozens of wizard-driven tag editors that can significantly reduce the time needed to create polished sites. You'll discover 450 Javascripts, VBScripts, and DHTML scripts, an HTML source compressor, and syntax highlighting. Most impressive is 1st Page 2000's help system, including an HTML reference guide, Server Side Includes documentation, and a Cascading Style Sheets manual.

1st Page 2000 Web Editor runs in three (four) modes: 1) Normal Mode; 2) Easy Mode; 3) Expert Mode; and 4) Hardcore Mode. I tested this web editor in all modes and in all it runs really fine on Windows 2000 Professional. Fast, efficient, precise, smooth, reliable! In the photo below you can see it running in Hardcore mode:

1st Page 2000 is an extensive web authoring suite that lets you build and enchant Web sites. 1st Page contains HTML enchanting tools that bring your existing Web documents to the next level. Thousands of professional web builders are using 1st Page to enchant and build their websites! From beginners to experienced web builders 1st Page suits everyone thanks to its QuickModeSwitchTM feature. Unlike most WYSIWYG editors 1st Page 2000 won't add unwanted junk code. It's a flexible environment that simply aids, creates, enchants, and speeds web development. Thousands of web builders worldwide are taking the move to switch over to 1st Page 2000 to create and manage their web sites.

In this other photo below you can see 1st Page Web Editor running in Expert Mode on my Test Machine, a Pentium 200, ASUS motherboard, 128MB RAM.

In this another photo below you can see 1st Page 2000 working in Easy Mode. Note the giant icons on the toolbar:

If you see my Windows taskbar you note that my Namo Web Editor is also started when I tested 1st Page 2000. Many other applications are also started and no excessive CPU is consumed! The only problem I encountered in this test is that when I compressed my code using 1st Page 2000 feature built-in the final result on both my browsers used in test (IE5 and NS 4.61) are damaged. The same page I compressed using Pretty HTML without any problem! In a page with 52,444K the 1st Page 2000 Compressor was reduced 11,2K.

1st Page is extremely flexible because you can just about customize anything within it. If you use editors for long periods of time you would probably want to adjust the look and feel of the editor to your own desires. To do this, there are 4 dialogs you can use.

Customize Toolbar

Lets you customize everything on the Expert Palette Toolbar. Buttons can be added/deleted/moved around and Tabs like "Tables" can be renamed or deleted. If you choose to, you can create your own Toolbar tab and move buttons on there. Before you can customize The Palette Toolbar, make sure your in Normal or Expert Mode. To switch to any on of these modes, they can be found on the "Options" menus.

To customize toolbars goto Options -> Customize Toolbar...

Editing Preferences

Lets you customize the look and feel of the workspace editor. Within this dialog you can change what colors are used to syntax highlight the tags, text, asp, cf, ssi, javascript, comment tags, etc. You can also change the editor font and font size within this dialog.

General Program Preferences

This is the main customization dialog. Within this dialog you can define External browsers used for previewing, File filters to specify what file types you want 1st Page to recognize, customize how HTML tags are inserted, define the File Explorer options and specify external programs such as an Image Editor.

Customize Keyboard Shortcuts

Lets you customize what keys will result in what actions. You can change all the keyboard shortcuts within this dialog. E.g For instance you can change (Find Ctrl-F) to (Find Ctrl-P).

3 ways to Develop your Web page

3 way development modes gives you access to 3 different types of user levels. These are:

   Easy mode
   Advanced/Expert mode
   Hardcore mode

When you switch to any one of these modes, 1st Page changes its toolbar, menus and resources to fit your user level. To switch to a different mode do this:

Goto the "Options" menus, from there you will see:

   Switch to Normal Mode
   Switch to Easy Mode
   Switch to Advanced/Expert Mode
   Switch to Hardcore Mode

Select any of those menu items and the mode switch will take place.

* Note* Normal Mode simply allows you to disable/enable toolbars from any of the 3  development modes. For example you could enable the Easy toolbar and Expert toolbar in  the same window using Normal Mode.
