WarpZip Rated 5 Butterflies
![]()
Hi All.
OS/2 developer Wayne Swanson (PillarSoft) announced today May 16 that the version
3.0 of the awarded winning WarpZip finally is out and I downloaded it and tested
this fine release on my OS/2 Client Warp 4.5 9Warp 4 + FP13). It is running
just fine here as my default compressed files manager. I'm registered user of
WarpZip since the first beta and I purchased my license in BMT Micro, Inc.,
world's largest OS/2 apps reseller. In the photo below you can see WarpZip 3.0
files opened into FileStar/2 file manager on my Warp 4.5

Here is the Wayne Swanson's announcement:
Since our announcement on the 15th we have updated the PillarSoft
web site with downloads of the new version of WarpZip v3.0. We have also included
one of the other archiving formats we have been working on. WarpZip will now
search for, list, view, extract and do "near seamless" installations
from Zip, Arj, Rar, Lzh, Tgz, Gz and OS/2 "packed" file formats.
We have zipped the new format archives all together (in their original form)
into one large archive to make it easier for users to find each of them. This
archive should also make it easier to install support for each of the new
formats by allowing you to open it and drag the four new unarchiver binaries
into the WarpZip directory.
The archive (for the unarchiver binaries) is rather large right now (1 meg)
but
we will pare the size of it down as we find the legal means of distributing
the
binaries only with WarpZip. Some of them are freeware but we will err on the
side of caution until we are sure of the distribution status and rules for each
format.
We have also updated the PillarSoft Suite with the new version of WarpZip as
well as updating the drop dead dates in the four or five apps that use it.
We won't go into the feature list here but invite you to take a look at our
website for more information. As has been the case from it's first release...
there is no charge for this update to WarpZip.
We will be offering special pricing at WarpTech on all of our software as well
as an online discount of the PillarSoft Suite (99 USD) for the duration of
WarpTech. [Please allow extra time to get keys delivered as we will be on the
road and internet access may be spotty.]
The support for new formats in WarpZip has been a long time coming and we hope
it makes WarpZip your "one stop shop" for dealing with all of your
archives.

Photo above shows WarpZip 3.0 Installer running on @Macarlo's Warp 4.5
WarpZip comes in an archive that is also a self-extracting installer. The installer will query you for an installation directory and the dll and help file locations. When choosing a location for the dlls and help files, you will be presented with a listbox filled with presently used dll and help file locations. If you choose one of these locations for both items, the config.sys will NOT have to be modified. Perhaps now is the time to consolidate all those smaller apps dlls and helps into one set of directories so programs like this don't have to add to your config.sys. (see "Installation Suggestions" in the program help file)
Because WarpZip is self-extracting and self-cleaning you will not be able to install it into the same directory it is running in. If you wish to install into the directory you started this program from you'll need to dismiss this window, "Exit" the installation and move the archive to another directory before restarting it again.
WarpZip uses InfoZip's Unzip32.dll file for unzipping archives. Make sure you have the latest version of Zip.exe and Unzipsfx.exe installed on your system if you want to add to or build any new archives. We try to keep the latest version available at the PillarSoft website or a link to their home at cdrom.com.
A moot point since it is self installing but... If for any reason, you want to install WarpZip manually, you can: Run the quick and dirty "rebuild.cmd" to make the desktop object. Make sure the dll's are in a directory listed in the LIBPATH statement or add their location to LIBPATH. Make sure the help file is in a directory listed in the SET HELP statement or add its' location to SET HELP.
Adding RAR, LZH, ARJ & TGZ support
1) Install WarpZip
2) Download http://www.pillarsoft.net/pub/archiver.zip from our website
3) Start WarpZip and open the downloaded "archiver.zip"
4) In WarpZip's directory container, locate the directory WarpZip was installed
into.
5) Highlight the unrar.exe, lha.exe, arj.exe and untgzos2.exe files.
6) Drag the highlighted files to the directory container and drop them on the
WarpZip installed directory.
7) Restart WarpZip and try them out!
In order to distribute these archiver binaries, we need to try to remain legal and still determine the best way to get them to the user in the easiest possible fashion. Some of them are freeware and we may be able to distribute the binary only but until that is determined we will err on the side of safety. This makes the "Archive.zip" file approximately a 1 meg download but we hope to change that in the future.
Keep in mind that only extracting and viewing these archive formats is included. To build archives in these formats please see the help and license information in each of their respective archives.
Uninstalling WarpZip
The installation program builds a script that will delete all the files (even if they were installed to different directories) and remove the desktop object automatically. It will remove the directory also if it is run from a command line. If you've chosen to change the config.sys file, you will have to delete the additions manually. We may add that feature in the future.
Installing WZPrep (Download Preprocessor)
After installing WarpZip, open the help file and locate the "General Help" section, then choose "Download Preprocessor" and scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions on setting up Netscape to use WZPrep as a helper application.
Other notes
Be sure to fill in the "Drives" setting in the settings notebook. Most users will probably want to have WarpZip skip looking for floppy, zip, cd or network drives.
WarpZip works best on an HPFS formatted drive. There are still a couple of issues with installation on FAT drives, namely, viewing files that are archived in subdirectories.
Be sure to set all the parameters in the settings notebook! And set the "Download settings..." if you want to use the Download Preprocessor with any browser or ftp program.

Take the work out of downloading software. WarpZip will handle the details from the first click in your browser to the archives' final resting place. Beneath WarpZip's pleasant interface you will find plenty of revolutionary and powerful functions that will save both time and effort and boost your productivity.
WarpZip offers a fresh new way to handle your archives. The integration of a directory tree as part of the interface makes unarchiving complete archives or just selected file(s) from an archive to any directory as simple as a 3 inch drag and drop, to ANYWHERE on your drives. If you don't have the directory you want, create it! You can also open any folder from the directory tree for drag and drop operations. Delete any directory or even complete directory trees from WarpZip!
WarpZip's Download PreProcessor allows your browsing sessions to sport one click downloads that obey your every whim. It will selectively move your downloaded zip files to any directory you choose, test them for integrity, virus test them and queue them up for later review by WarpZip. All this is handled seamlessly in the background while you spend your online time making your browser session count. When you're offline, WarpZip will be waiting with the list of files you've downloaded. It will automatically load them in it's queue on startup and present you with any test results you may have requested.
OS/2 Packed file extensions can have "_" or "@" or no extension at all. So how do you locate them? Better yet, how do you locate and see what files are archived inside of them? We are unaware of any software that will help you find those almost unrecognizable OS/2 packed files except WarpZip.
WarpZip will search a directory, directory tree, hard disk or CD for zip files as well as OS/2 packed files. It will add or delete files from archives, view files in archives or you can test run them (to do an installation, for example) and let WarpZip clean up after you. You can test zip files or run virus scans, view bitmaps, grep, build self extractors, copy, move, rename... well... you get the picture...
