Throughout the next 12 to 15 months we plan to release features on IBM Software Choice that can be used with OS/2 Warp 4, WorkSpace On-Demand and Warp Server for e-business.
Some of the features and their target availability dates are:
Using either a compact flash card or a hard disk installed in the Network Station Series 2800 as a local cache, large portions of the WorkSpace On-Demand client operating system downloads, as files to the local cache, the first time the Network Station Series 2800 boots. Boot performance is maintained by using those files for subsequent boots. This feature provides the WorkSpace On-Demand OS/2 thin client machine class (IBM8364B) and server side support. Included with the Network Station QuickOn for Workspace On-Demand is automatic synchronization, when an administrator applies a FixPak to the WorkSpace On-Demand 2.0 operating system on the server, those files in the FixPak, that are cached on any Series 2800 will be updated the next time that Network Station boots.
While a significant reduction in network bandwidth required to boot Series 2800 Network Stations is accomplished, boot time is not always reduced. Boot time will generally be reduced when the network bandwidth or the boot server become saturated when booting normally. For example, boot time improvement would not normally seen booting a single Series 2800 using this support verses booting using conventional WorkSpace On-Demand 2.0 remote boot. In this scenario neither the server nor the network reach their maximum capacity so the reduction in network traffic does not realize any boot time gains. However, if several clients are easily saturating a 10 MB Ethernet network to boot, this support can provide significant boot time reductions and maintain the Network Station Series 2800 boot performance.
Using the Network Station QuickOn for Workspace On-Demand is very easy and maintains the WorkSpace On-Demand goal and paradigm of server managed clients. All that is required is the creation of a machine definition using the GUI or CLI from the IBM8364B machine class for every Series 2800 Network Station that has flash memory or hard disk hardware installed. From then on the use of the flash memory or hard disk is transparent to the administrator.
The requirements to use this support are a WorkSpace On-Demand 2.0 boot server and Network Station Series 2800 machines with ATA compliant compact flash cards or hard disks installed. The compact flash card or hard disk must already be partitioned and formatted with a partition size of at least 48 MB. This partition may only be used for caching as other files present on the partition can be erased by the Network Station QuickOn for Workspace On-Demand caching system. Compact flash cards should be formatted with the FAT 16 file system. Hard disk caching partitions may be formatted with FAT 16 or HPFS file systems. Target availability date for this feature for WorkSpace On-Demand is October 1, 1999.
Target availability date for this client feature for OS/2 Warp 4 is first quarter 2000.
Target availability date for this server feature for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business is first quarter 2000.
Included in these enhancements are:
Target availability date for this server feature for OS/2 Warp 4, WorkSpace On-Demand, and OS/2 Warp Server for e-business is first quarter 2000.
Target availability date for this server feature for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business is third quarter 2000.
