 Announcing VMware Express for Linux

Palo Alto, Calif. And Tokyo, Japan, May 11, 2000 - TurboLinux Japan, Inc. and VMware Inc. today announced a business partnership to allow TurboLinux to bundle VMware Express for Linux with its latest product for the desktop market.  Under this agreement, VMware Express for Linux will be offered for the first time in Japan with TurboLinux Workstation Japanese Version 6.0.

VMware's virtual machine technology unbinds the conventional ties between the operating system and the hardware, enabling increased flexibility, productivity, and security in computing.  VMware's desktop product line, which is the first incarnation of this technology, allows users to run multiple operating systems at the same time without the need to reboot or partition the hard drive.

VMware Express for Linux, the latest desktop offering from VMware, will satisfy the needs of Linux users who want to run Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 in order to access the Windows applications they need.

TurboLinux Workstation 6.0 is the high-performance choice for Linux on the desktop.  TurboLinux Workstation Japanese Version 6.0, TurboLinux Japan's latest distribution product for the desktop market, bundles a full set of commercial applications based on the latest open source resources, such as the Linux kernel.  Its system design, unique functionality, stability for the Japanese language environment and ease of use fulfill all of the requirements for a desktop operating system.

The inclusion of VMware Express with the TurboLinux distribution creates a complete desktop system for the end user.  TurboLinux users who need to run
Windows 95 or Windows 98 applications will be able to do so quickly and easily.  VMware Express virtual machines will allow users to toggle between TurboLinux and Windows instantaneously, and users will be able to share files between TurboLinux and Windows using the Samba file sharing service that comes preconfigured.

"VMware Express for Linux makes it very simple for TurboLinux users to access Windows applications," notes TurboLinux Japan President Kuniteru Kojima. "We want to provide the most complete Linux desktop solution for our customers, and bundling VMware Express for Linux furthers this goal."

VMware Director of Marketing Réza Malekzadeh adds, "TurboLinux provides high-performance products and a quality support system for its Linux customers, and it is well known as the premier provider of Linux distributions and support in Japan.  We are pleased that TurboLinux customers in Japan will be able to benefit from VMware Express."

TurboLinux Workstation Japanese Version 6.0 is currently priced at 12,800 yen, and TurboLinux Japan expects that the price will remain the same even with the addition of VMware Express for Linux.  TurboLinux Japan will release the bundled product in June.
