TECHNOLOGY

JavaTM Shared Data Toolkit Software Offers Real-Time
Collaborative Solutions for the Enterprise.

PALO ALTO, California - Sun Microsystems,
Inc. today announced the immediate availability of the
JavaTM Shared Data Toolkit technology; a toolkit for
writing highly interactive distributed collaborative
applets and applications in the Java programming
language. The Java Shared Data Toolkit software can be
incorporated by developers into applications and
development tools for creating chat forums, shared
applications, remote presentations or other applications
that would be augmented by collaborative capabilities.

The Java Shared Data Toolkit software contains the
necessary technology and functionality to that
developers need to create collaborative applications.
Written entirely in the Java programming language, the
Java Shared Data Toolkit software meets Sun's 100%
Pure JavaTM certification standards and can be used on
any platform that supports the Java Development Kit
(JDKTM) software 1.1.

"The Java Shared Data Toolkit is an excellent example of
the wide array of capabilities that Sun is dedicated to
providing developers through the breadth of the Java
platform," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and
general manager of the Java Platform for Sun's Java
Software. "Collaborative applications developed with
this streamlined, multi-threaded toolkit will allow
valuable time and cost savings while providing a means
to share information with multiple users across
platforms and networks."

Included in the Java Shared Data Toolkit software are
sample applications which demonstrate the capabilities
of four different collaborations: a chat environment
where participants can type conversation; a shared
whiteboard application that allows users to sketch
diagrams or drawings; a stock quote viewer that gives
users continuous stock ticker updates; and a sound
server that provides for shared audio in presentations.
