Sun adds New Java
Technology Capabilities
to Solstice Enterprise
Manager Software
Enabling Telcos, ISPs, and Enterprise
Service Providers to Create Service Driven Networks Through Dynamic Administration
and Distribution of Next-Generation Services
TELEMANAGEMENT WORLD/DALLAS, TEXAS, - October 13, 1998 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc.
today announced a new JavaTM technology-enabled version of its highly scalable,
multi-protocol distributed network management foundation, SolsticeTM Enterprise
ManagerTM 3.0. This new version capitalizes on the Java environment to provide a
faster time to market of new business services while maintaining practically unlimited
scalability. New integration of the JavaTM Dynamic ManagementTM Kit with Solstice
Enterprise Manager 3.0 offers service providers the vehicle for managing existing
technologies and the emerging use of Java under a common and consistent management
foundation as well as providing rapid application development capabilities.
"The rollout of new voice, video, and data services and their accompanying
billing and customer care solutions escalates performance and scalability requirements
for telcos and ISPs," said Jack Collins, director of Network Management Products
at Sun Microsystems. "The introduction of Java into Solstice Enterprise Manager
3.0 capitalizes on an efficient development environment to reduce deployment times
and total cost of ownership as carriers rush to beat their competition to market."
Aggressive Support for Telecom Carriers' Investments "Sun is committed to
supporting telecommunications carriers wishing to protect their investment in legacy
applications and emerging technologies like Java and Corba," added Collins.
AT&T Wireless, a leading provider of advanced wireless telephony and messaging
services, is using Solstice Enterprise Manager to manage the infrastructure elements
that support its CDPD wireless data environment. "The new Solstice Enterprise
Manager 3.0 is faster and has more features allowing easier management of service-driven
network elements," said John Dyte, AT&T Wireless Technical Team Member.
"Best of all, the improved Java interface opens the doors for developing solutions
to fit our environment."
New in Solstice Enterprise Manager 3.0
Several new features and enhancements allow Solstice
Enterprise Manager to manage reliable, available, and scalable networks of several
million objects while aggressively deploying new products and services.
An improved user interface hides the complexity of technical terminology and provides
end users with intuitively titled windows and dialog boxes, a common menu structure,
and simplified error messages.
A suite of Java tools allows rapid application development and cross-platform support,
as well as a 100% Pure Java graphical installation wizard to ease installation of
the management solution as a whole. The Java Development Environment, Java Agent
Management, and Java Installation Wizard provide the basis for speedy deployment
and remote management of applications with decreased installer or administrator
intervention. These features significantly reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
The integration of the Java Dynamic Management Kit is the first such implementation
that bridges the gap between existing standards and the growing use of Java for
agent implementation. Integrating intelligence into devices in this way reduces
management traffic on the network, allows low-level problems to be dealt with locally
without alarm generation, enables quicker response to events, and contributes to
decreased TCO.
The improved implementation of new services on top of the Solstice Enterprise Manager
infrastructure allows flexibility and scalability for future growth without modification
of existing applications. This protects customers' investments in legacy applications.
Integration of Tools From Edge Technologies, Inc. And ADC Metrica Concurrent releases
issued today will announce Sun's integration of performance management tools from
ADC Metrica and graphical user interface (GUI) tools from Edge Technologies, Inc.
into Solstice Enterprise Manager 3.0 software.
Pricing, Availability, and Future Enhancements
Sun plans to announce pricing and availability for Solstice
Enterprise Manager 3.0 within sixty (60) days. Future enhancements and Service
Module add-ons are also presently scheduled to be announced at that time as well.
