Sun and Quark
Forge Joint
Marketing Agreement

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Sept. 1, 1998 -- Sun
Microsystems Inc. and Quark Inc. today announced an
agreement in which the two companies will combine
marketing efforts that encompass future Quark Digital
Media System (QuarkDMS) and Quark Publishing
System (QPS) software solutions, and Sun hardware and
the Solaris operating environment. The two companies
will engage in communicating the advantages of Quark
products on the Sun platform -- world-class software on
powerful enterprise servers -- to publishers and digital
content managers.

"Sun has a well-earned reputation with traditional and
new media publishers for providing reliable, available
and scalable systems to run enterprise-wide, business
critical applications," said Doug Kaewert, vice president
market development, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Quark is a
household name in the industry and they are expanding
from desktop and workgroup solutions to the enterprise,
where Sun is well-established."

McGraw Hill's Business Week and Channing l'Bete,
companies for whom publishing systems are mission
critical, are among the early adopters of the powerful
combination of Quark client/server solutions on the Sun
platform.

The objective of the agreement is to combine marketing
and technical support efforts to ensure optimal
performance and support of current and future releases
of Quark solutions running on Sun Enterprise servers
and the Solaris operating environment. Both companies
will offer technical training and support toward this new
endeavor, as well as create joint marketing and sales
initiatives.

"Quark's leadership in the publishing industry,
combined with Sun's expertise in enterprise computing,
position both companies to provide the best quality and
best service to our respective customers," said Kamar
Aulakh, Quark vice president of research and
development. "Quark will incorporate its extensive
publishing experience and innovation into client/server
products that cater to our customers' growing needs."
Released last spring, QPS 2.0 is a high-performance
editorial management and document production system.

Announced earlier this year, QuarkDMS is an
enterprise-wide asset management system that allows
customers to manage a virtually unlimited number of
digital resources. QuarkDMS offers true document
deconstruction and easy repurposing of elements from
QuarkXPress TM documents to print, CD-ROM and Web
publications.

Sun Microsystems provides market-leading hardware
and software solutions that are open, highly reliable and
scalable, and that support a broad base of customers in
the media, publishing and entertainment industries. Sun
servers, the robust Solaris operating environment and
Java technologies play critical roles in the creation,
management and distribution of digital content for such
companies as Time Inc, Bertelsmann AG, Viacom Online
Services, CNN Interactive, Simon & Schuster, Howard
Publications and News International.
