Sun Microsystems Promotes
Mike splain to Vice President
SAN JOSE, Calif. - August 19, 1998 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today
announced the promotion of Mike Splain to Vice President and his appointment to
the position of Sun Fellow. The awarding of a Fellowship is an extremely rare
event at Sun, with only five other individuals having had the honor throughout
the company's history.
The board determining candidacy for the prestigious
Fellowship award consists of the other
five fellows; James Gosling, Rob Gingell, Jim
Mitchell, Bob Sproull, Ivan Sutherland
and Greg Papadopolus, Sun's Chief Technology Officer.
A unanimous decision was reached after consideration of
Splain's outstanding contributions to the field of engineering
and his impact on Sun's business.
"The award of this fellowship connotes the highest
level of
excellence in this field." Scott McNealy, Chairman,
President and
CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc., said in an awards ceremony.

have found that Mike's sustained technical leadership and
vision,
particularly in the area of SPARCTM development, has had

contribution of engineers like Mike that will maintain Sun

landscape."
The value of Mike's work on SPARC, the flagship processor
for

experience and has been delivering 64-bit performance for

Mike joined Sun Microsystems in 1988 as diagnostics manager
for
new high-end servers product lines. Prior to joining Sun,
Mike was
an engineer at Ridge Computers, Vitesse Semiconductor, Encore
Computer Corp. and Digital Equipment Corp. Mike holds a
B.S.E.E from the University of Connecticut.
