PAGIC.net Integrates Email And Phone Service
With competitive pressures heating up the Asian telecom market, service providers
are being forced to rapidly innovate their product offerings to better satisfy and
retain customers. To better compete, Pacific Cellular Company(PCC), Taiwan's second
largest cellular provider, and Acer.Net, a large private ISP, have formed a joint
venture called PAGIC.net (Pacific-Acer Global Internet Corp.). As part of this partnership,
the two companies plan to deliver a new, integrated email and phone service to their
customers. With the new service expected to be available in February, customers
will be able to send and receive email messages from their wireless phones.
One of the key reasons PAGIC.net chose Sun Internet Mail Server software was its
low total cost of ownership will keep the individual costs of managing and administering
each mailbox to a bare minimum. With the cost of providing email service based
on Sun solutions so low, PAGIC.net can then offer a very affordable service to its
entire wireless customer base.
"As the first integrated email and wireless communications service available
in Taiwan, the PAGIC.net service will provide PCC's wireless phone customers with
convenient access to email from anywhere, at anytime," said James JS Lee, assistant
vice president of PAGIC.net. "Only Sun Internet Mail Server software and the
Solaris operating environment could deliver the performance and scalability our
messaging infrastructure demanded to reliably service over 3 million wireless customers
in Taiwan."
"Powerful messaging solutions that can scale to millions of users while keeping
ownership costs to a minimum have never been more important," said Stuart Wells,
vice president of Network Software Products at Sun. "With email quickly becoming
the number one application for a new generation of Internet-connected pagers, cell
phones, TVs, and handheld devices, and companies using their Web presence as a primary
means of communicating with and servicing consumers, a solid messaging platform
is a must. With Sun Internet Mail Server and the Solaris operating environment,
Sun is one of the leaders in the industry for these types of applications."
