Sun Broadens Popular
Workgroup Server Line with
New Enterprise 250 System
PALO ALTO, Calif.- On the heels of
its 79
percent unit growth in the UNIX« entry server market
last year(1),
Sun Microsystems, Inc. today expanded its best-selling workgroup
server line with the SunTM EnterpriseTM 250 server -- a
new system
which delivers enterprise-class features and functionality
in a
dual-processor server. In addition to delivering a robust,
yet
affordable solution for small businesses and workgroups,
Sun has
leveraged its network computing know-how to include new
remote
management capabilities -- making the Sun Enterprise 250
server,
running the SolarisTM operating environment, an ideal solution
for
geographically dispersed branch or remote offices.
Sun Enterprise workgroup servers are customers' UNIX "system
of
choice". According to International Data Corporation
(IDC), Sun
leads the UNIX entry server market -- outranking all competitors
in
shipments (1).
The Enterprise 250 system will help Sun to further extend
its
leadership position in the workgroup space with proven
enterprise-class technologies such as the reliable Solaris
operating
environment and powerful UltraSPARCTM processors. This unique
combination of scalability and availability make the system
a
superior alternative to competitive systems based on PC
technologies for business critical applications such as
database,
Internet/intranet, ERP and collaborative computing.
"Sun's ability to provide robust computing solutions
for workgroup
environments is obviously hitting a home run with customers,"
said
Mark Canepa, vice president and general manager of Sun's
workgroup servers. "The Enterprise 250 system builds
on the
success of the Enterprise 450 server -- bringing enterprise
features
and functionality to the workgroup -- and now to a two-processor
system."
The Sun Enterprise
250 Server
Housed in a mini-tower enclosure and
available in a rack-mount
configuration, the PCI-based Sun Enterprise 250 server can
be
equipped with up to two 300MHz UltraSPARC-II 64-bit RISC
processors with up to 2MB of cache each, up to 2GB of memory,
over 100GB of internal storage and over 1TB of external
storage
capacity and four PCI slots for exceptional I/O throughput
via two
high-performance 64-bit PCI busses.
The Sun Enterprise 250 server also comes with an extensive
array
of built-in reliability, availability and serviceability
(RAS) features
usually found only in mission-critical environments, including
automatic system recovery, hot-swappable disks and redundant
power supplies.
The system also features the Solaris Web Start tool for
web-based
installation and the Sun Enterprise Web Start Server tool,
which
facilitates installation and configuration of multiple Sun
systems
simultaneously and remotely. Both tools have easy-to-use
GUIs
based on JavaTM technology.
Remote System
Control
The Sun Enterprise 250 server is well-suited
for branch or remote
office locations as it features new remote management capabilities
with the Remote System Control tool. It provides access,
monitoring and control from anywhere -- enabling centralized
management of distributed business applications through
a
comprehensive low-cost solution.
From an easy-to-use GUI or powerful command line interface,
system administrators have the ability to control the server
from any
desktop, in any location. It allows the administrator to
manage
functions including power cycle and reset, running diagnostics,
displaying event logs and monitoring environmental sensing.
In addition, the Sun Enterprise 250 server's built-in system
service
processor provides inherently more reliable management of
the
system.
Comprehensive
Intranet Services
Like all of Sun's workgroup servers,
the Sun Enterprise 250 system
comes with SolarisTM for IntranetsTM software, one of the
industry's
most comprehensive and reliable intranet environments. Providing
a fast, highly reliable and cost-effective way to deliver
and
exchange business information, Solaris for Intranets software
delivers all of the essential services an enterprise requires
--
including integrated web, e-mail, security and network
management services. It also provides seamless interoperability
to
popular desktops and network computers -- enabling file
sharing
and printing capabilities for any document and access to
network
and other intranet services.
In addition, there is a customized version of the Solaris
server
software designed specifically for ISPs. SolarisTM for ISPsTM
software includes hardened security, ISP specific customization
for
installation, configuration and administration, performance
monitoring, and integrated ISP services for Web, ftp and
news.
Solaris for ISPs software, coupled with the rack-mounted
Sun
Enterprise 250 server, delivers a robust and scalable solution
for
ISPs.
Service and
Support
The Sun Enterprise 250 server comes
with a three-year hardware
warranty. In addition, Sun offers specific service options
for the
workgroup server market. The SunSpectrum PacTM program
delivers the support services of Sun's most popular program,
the
SunSpectrumSM SilverSM. Packaged for resellers and offered
worldwide, the SunSpectrum Pac program expands the Sun
warranty and gives workgroup server customers access to
Sun's
leading UNIX experts. The support package can be enhanced
to fit
the needs of a specific customer.
Enterprise
Workgroup Server Family
The Sun Enterprise 250 system is one
of five servers designed for
workgroup computing environments. The system is part of
the Sun
Enterprise server line, the industry's only single, binary-compatible
family of systems that scales from cost-effective workgroup
servers
to large department and data center systems. The Sun Enterprise
server family provides customers with unparalleled investment
protection -- enabling simple upgrades to larger systems
within the
line as information needs change.
Pricing and
Availability
The entry-level configuration of the
Sun Enterprise 250 server
comes with 1 250MHz UltraSPARC processor with 1MB cache,
128MB of memory, 4GB of storage, the Solaris operating
environment and Solaris for Intranets software and has a
