Data Representations, Inc. announce the general availability of its flagship product, Simplicity for Java(TM). Simplicity for Java is a rapid application design tool for Java 1.1.
Written completely in Java, Simplicity lets developers build Java applications and applets interactively. Developers can click-n-drop Java Layouts, AWT Components, Simplicity s own extended components, and Third Party Java Beans into their applications. Simplicity features on-the-fly execution of Java source code, enabling applications to execute class declaration code, constructor code, method code, and event code as they are designed. This dynamic execution reduces the traditional, three step, Code-Compile-Test, software development process to a single step: Design. Every change that is made to an application s source code is immediately integrated into a working model of the program.

Simplicity also features the Code Sourcerer(TM), which interviews the user in order to determine what should happen in response to events and writes the appropriate Java source code. This allows Simplicity for Java to be used by both experienced and inexperienced Java developers.

Simplicity for Java comes with an Integrated Design Environment (IDE) which organizes all of the components of a project. A project can include multiple applications/applets, images, sounds, Java source/class files, HTML files, Java Beans, and any other data files related to a project. The Simplicity IDE also relieves the user from worrying about pathnames on both a local file system and on a web server.

Simplicity for Java is written completely in Java 1.1 to run on any Java-enabled platform, including OS/2 Warp, Solaris, Win95/NT, HP-UX, Linux and many others. Simplicity for Java has been submitted for 100% Pure Java certification.

A free tryout version of Simplicity for Java is available from Data Representations' web site, http://www.datarepresentations.com/.
Simplicity for Java is priced at $89 US for a single user license.

Start the install with the following command:

java SimplicityInstall

If you are using Microsoft's SDK, use jview SimplicityInstall. On MacOS, run JBindery. Enter 'SimplicityInstall' in the Command box, drag theSimplicityInstall.class' to the Classpath box and press the Run button. Ignore the error messages issued at the end of the install.

Platform specific notes

OS/2 Warp

The installation must be performed on an HPFS drive.

Win95 (Sun's JDK)

Sun's JDK has a serious memory problem which can cause the JVM to crash
in Win95 (not NT!). If you build large programs in the Simplicity Composer
you will see this. Use the 'Win95' Start menu item.

WinNT (Sun's JDK)

There is a bug in Sun's JDK reading images from a zip/jar file on winNT.
To correct this, unzip the Simplicity.zip file, found in the installation
directory. Use the 'WinNT' Start menu item.

Win95/NT (Microsoft's SDK)

Use the 'Microsoft SDK' Start menu item.

Macintosh OS 8

Macintosh users must first install the MRJ 2.0 or later AND the
MRJ SDK 2.0.1ea3, both available from http://applejava.apple.com/.
After InstallShield installs Simplicity (ignore the error messages),
start JBindery. Fill in the following items:

Command: datarep.Simplicity
Redirect Stdout: nowhere (/dev/null)
Redirect Stdin: nowhere (/dev/null)
Class path:
add Simplicity.zip (Do NOT decompress this file!)
add the Project directory
Appearance:
'Size boxes intrude' can be checked for smaller
windows Application:
Minimum app heap: 10240 K
Maximum app heap: 102400 K
(These numbers are not saved by JBindery and
should be added upon each invocation of Simplicity.)
Press the Run button.

It is strongly recommended that Mac users upgrade to MacOS 8.1.
When using Simplicity for Java, you should disable virtual
memory.
