Hi, Folks!
Are you interested in upgrade your Linux Red Hat 5.0 to the new version 5.2? Hehehe.....Warning, man! This new version is really very good, but is also bombed by a special bug. The Red Hat distribution has been increased the kernell adding several PnP enhancements but for the first time in the last years the PPP service is not authomatically started! The user must be edit the
etc/resolv.conf (in past versions like Colgate (4.0), Biltmore (4.2) and Hurricane (5.0) it's not necessary: you simply install the Linux and access immediattly the Net (on Colgate and Biltmore I used the dialer Adtran and on the Hurricane I used the PPP interface of Network Configurator (ppp0).
If you have a Linux Red Hat 5.0 installed you can't run the StarOffice 5.0 because this suite requests the new libraries. StarOffice 5.0 runs very fine on Linux Red Hat 5.2 (runs rather than on OS/2 or on Windows). The only problem is that you can't register online your desktop, because Linux Red Hat 5.2 simply can't access the Net if you don't discover the problem!. The user connects the ISP, have PING signals but have not a genuine connection. If you startt Lynx the prompt said: "Alert! Unable to connect remote host!" If you starts Communicator, it saids: "Netscape is unable to locate the server. The server does not have a DNS entry". If you are registered user, like me, and contact the support (free for 90 days) you will verify the support by email simply not exist: Tim, the Red Hat man, encourages you to read FAQs...
If you are accessing just fine the Net with Linux Red Hat 5.0 and you intend upgrade it to the new version 5.2, warning! The upgrade simply disables the PPP. You can create the PPP interface and connect the ISP; but have not negotiation and the access is disabled. Also you can't access the Net using Minicom ou the
ppp-on script.
If you install this new version as a new installation or you upgrade other with it you can use the
dmesg | less command to check: the PPP line discipline is deregistered in a first step; in a second step the PPP simply disappears!
If you are an experient Linux user you can recompille the kernel with
make config adding the necessary support; but you are not an experient Linux user I suggest you download the new libraries and add it on the version 5.0 of Red Hat for run StarOffice. Hehehe....
Well, this version 5.2 is really fine and I'm running it just fine on my supermachine with several HDDs. StarOffice 5.0 runs really fine here man! I recompilled my kernel and I'm very happy! But note this recompillation it's not necessary: edit the
resolv.conf adding the appropriate IP adresses after the word <nameserver> and the problem is solved.
Do you like X? Well, here have several X interfaces, man! Injoy! If you are expecting CDE or KDE, this version have another level of X interface, with the new WindowMaker.
