Get qikb3.zip (820,7k) in Hobbes
by Daniel Goggia, Team OS/2
This is a program called QikBac, a simply backup utility for your config.sys
file, autoexec.bat file, OS2.ini and OS2sys.ini files, with out having to do it
at bootup.
It will also now backup your Dos and Windows files. This means your Dos partitions
config.sys file, autoexec.bat file and your Windows ( 3.1 ) INI files, Win95 INI
if you have it installed on C: drive. At the time, Qikbac will install or try
to install the Dos/Windows support, even if you do not hav dos and windows installed.
This will just give you an error of directory or files not found. QikBac should
still install, just leaving you a window to close that lets you know there was
a error.
The QikBac was developed by me for a quick way to backup these files while
programming. It seemed I was always destroying my system and this gave me a way
to backup the files with a click of the mouse.
The QikBac comes with a clock, buttons to backup config.sys files on C:, D:, E:
and F:, on up to drive P:, along with the autoexec.bat files of those drives. This
version can do Dos/Windows files and back them up also. It is not Windows 95 FAT32
compliant, another words it will only see FAT and HPFS file systems or the drives
that OS/2 sees.
It will backup Win95 INI files that are in the Windows directory, and only those
that are in the main Windows directory. The same three directories will be created
in Win95 that are in Windows 3.1 windows directory.
THEY ARE:
a) INI1BK
b) INI2BK
c) INI3BK
Each diredtory being a seperate backup copy of your Windows INI files found in
the Windows directory.
To install QikBac, put all the files that came with the zipped package into a
temporary directory or onto a diskette (1.44), and then run the QBinstal.exe from
a OS/2 command line, or from the desktop view of the file by clicking on QBinstal.exe.
You will have to of unzipped the Qik3b.Zip onto diskette or a temperary file in
order to install QikBac
The QBinstal window will open, showing the drive choices that you may make. The
QBinstal program will give you the option of installing the QikBac program to drives
C:, D:, E:, F:, G: and on up to drive P:.
After the program files are installed, the next step is to tell QikBac where your
OS2 directory is, you do this by clicking on the radio button under Press Drive
Where OS/2 Directory Is, For Dll File Install ", for Example: If your OS2
directory is on drive C:, press the radio button with C:, if it is on D:, press
the radio button with the D: on it, and this will setup the DLL files into the
proper path, along with the dummy files needed to run the backup program for the
ini files.
If the install program does not install an icon on your desktop, you will have
to manually add the program to the desktop, see Adding Program Objects in Customizing
The System inside the OS/2 Warp Desktop Guide inside the Task Folder that is in
the Information Folder, now that is a run down of folders for you<smile>.
If you are using Warp 3 or earlier OS/2 versions, look under migrating programs
to the desktop in the OS/2 help files, this will show you how to put objects onto
your desktop.
You can not just copy the QikBac.exe to the desktop, as it will not be in its
QB directory, so it will not function correctly. Although you can shadow a copy
from the QB directory to the Desktop.
After installing QikBac, you just need to click twice on its icon with the left
mouse button to start it. Closing is done by clicking twice in the left upper corner,
with the left mouse button.
All other functions of QikBac work with one click of the left mouse button and
pointer.
You must also have OS/2 Presentation Manager installed on your system, and have
OS/2 Warp 3 or higher. Note: QikBac will work on OS/2 2.1, however you may have
to manually install the DLL's that came with the QikBac program. See the section
on manually installing.
If the QBinstal program fails to install the QikBac program, you can do it manually.
The steps below will guide you on what to do, and you may also need to use OS/2:
help.
1) Make a directory from an OS/2 command prompt called QB, on the drive you want
QikBac installed
2) Copy all files in the QikBac package into the QB directory
3) Now go into the the QB directory from an OS/2 command prompt
4) Then type Copy <Drive>:\*.qbi <Drive>:\OS2 where <Drive>:\OS2
is the drive and directory where OS2 are found
5) Next type Copy *.DLL <Drive>:\OS2\DLL where <Drive>:\OS2\Dll is
the drive and directory of your Dll files
6) Now use Add Programs(migrate 2.1) to desktop or shadow a copy of the QikBac.exe
to your desktop
