 Hi All.
I just tested here on my Server Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 and on my Workstation Windows 2000 Professional (a.k.a. NT 5.0) this fantastic tool developed by Ted Waldron III (originally for OS/2 Warp), Priority Master II. Are you interested in take total control on your Windows NT such it was an OS/2? Here is the appropriate tool for perform this miracle. With Priority Master II you can prioritize all programs you intend for better performance. In order to make this test I prioritized on my Server NT4 the Gun Coder Professional HotDog 6 and used it with dozens complicated and extensive web pages opened at the same time. On my Workstation Win 2000 I prioritized my Namo Web Editor and Windows Commander.

What is Priority Master II?

A program that is used to run your programs so it performs like a faster computer.

Priority Master II is a system and method that exposes the internal priority of applications to the user. This allows instant visual identification of a program's priority via the main window title bar and supports storing and retrieving of programs quickly with the capability to dynamically change the programs priority. It also provides an automated method for priority scanning which locates the first available priority Level which is not locked out by another program and insures timely execution of the selected program.

Load the Run and Hot List with your favorite programs.

Step 1: Identify your favorite programs and
enter them into the Run List or Hot List:

Both lists are filled using the Find Program and Prioritize dialog or by using the F11 key. After following the dialogs to locate the program, set the priority and set the parameters, the Select Find Program and Prioritize Options dialog will allow you select which list to enter the program into for easy retrieval. The "Add More Programs Now" check box will allow you to continuously add your programs without actually running them.

The Run List will hold up to 128 programs and the Hot List will hold up to 10 programs. The program entries in the Run List can be directly added to the Hot List. Load and store all of your programs into the Run List.

The Hot List should have only the programs that you want to start as a group and was intended to have all of the programs execute at system startup time.

Note: As a new user, you will automatically be in the Beginner setting of the User-Mode to insure safe and worry free priorities are selected. After you are familiar with using the product, change the User-Mode to Experienced or Advanced. The stored programs and priorities can easily be edited to increase or decrease the priority of the stored programs. At this point, you just want to load your favorite programs into the Run or Hot Lists.

Note: The priority displayed in the main window title bar always displays the last priority of the last program started.

Set selected features to run in automatic mode.

Step 2: Set the automatic features to trigger
at boot time or program load time.

There are several automatic features available that greatly enhance the products usability. The Priority Master II program was designed to enhance the performance of programs and should be used virtually all of the time. If you do not set the automatic features and start programs normally, then the chances are that the programs already running are the ones that you want to prioritize. You do not have to prioritize all of the programs to see a noticeable performance improvement in response time. The more programs that you do prioritize on unique priority levels, the greater the performance benefit.

The automatic features listed in order of decreasing importance are:

Run Prioritized Hot List Programs – F5 (Options Menu)

The Hot List should have only the programs that you want to start as a group and was intended to have all of the programs execute at system startup time. The Run Prioritized Hot List dialog has a “Run All on Startup” check box that will automatically start all of the programs when the Priority Master II program is started. For best results, put the Priority Master II program in the Windows Startup folder so that all of the programs are started at boot time.

An alternative method is to have the Hot List dialog automatically pop up when the Priority Master II program is started. On the dialog is a “Pop Up on Startup” check box and you can run all of the programs or select only the ones you want to run. Note that up to 10 prioritized programs can be started at once.

Run Prioritized Programs From List – F12 (Options Menu)

The Run List should contain every program that you normally use and holds up to 128 prioritized programs. The dialog has a “Pop Up on Startup” check box and you can set this to access to all of your programs at once. Again, if the Priority Master II program is in the Windows Startup folder, you can select programs to run or simply cancel the dialog as soon as the boots.

For additional information, see the Run Prioritized Programs From List dialog.

Set Foreground Program Priority (Options Menu)

This is a very useful feature to increase or decrease the priority of the foreground program. The priority change will be reflected in the main window title bar. Note that this option can be turned ON (Check the Activate box in the dialog) or OFF at any time.

For additional information, see the Set Foreground Program Priority dialog.

Auto Close Launched Programs on Exit (Options Menu)

This option is available from the main window and on all dialogs that start programs. You can selectively turn this option ON or OFF at any time. This is good for rapidly closing a group of programs at exit time.
For additional information, see the Auto Close Launched Programs on Exit help.

Auto Recovery Window (Options Menu)

Use this when running any program(s) in the RealTime class. For additional information, see the Auto Recovery Window dialog.

Auto Start Prioritized COMMAND.EXE (Options Menu)

This is used to start a prioritized DOS COMMAND.EXE window when Priority Master II is started. The dialog requires that the “Activate the Session” check box is checked for the window to start.
For additional information, see the Auto Start Prioritized COMMAND Window dialog.

Visual Idle Cycle Detection (Utilities Menu)

This is used to determine if a program is compute bound while Priority Master II is in the background. This can be used to determine the need for the Auto Recovery Window when running programs in the RealTime Class.

For additional information, see the Visual Idle Cycle Detection help.

Audible Idle Cycle Heartbeat (Utilities Menu)

This is used to determine if a program is compute bound while Priority Master II is in the background. This can be used to determine the need for the Auto Recovery Window when running programs in the RealTime Class.

For additional information, see the Audible Idle Cycle Heart Beat help.

Inverse Audible Idle Cycle Heartbeat (Utilities Menu)

This is used to determine if a program is compute bound while Priority Master II is in the background. This can be used to determine the need for the Auto Recovery Window when running programs in the RealTime Class.

About the ScheduPerformance, Inc.

ScheduPerformance, Inc. is a privately held company located in the Dallas/Ft Worth area of Texas. It markets the Priority Master II application and multi-tasking related consulting services. The company was founded in 1993 and his President and owner is Ted Waldron III. (photo).

Ted says about Priority Master II:

"Ideally, we would like to see a computing world in which application developers do not set the priority of their programs. Users would be able to overcome the system limitations and properly load balance their systems while maintaining full control over all executing programs. This would result in far greater system throughput and full control to the end-user.

The need for user level prioritization is generally accepted. However, there is a disturbing trend towards a low, medium and high priority settings. The user still does not know exactly what is meant by low, medium, and high priorities or how much higher or lower this is relative to other executing programs. Manufactures of such applications can request to ship a copy of Priority Master II with their programs at a greatly reduced rate. Our vision is to put a copy of Priority Master II on every OS/2 system and get manufactures not to prioritize their programs unless absolutely necessary. This would greatly enhance OS/2's multi-tasking capabilities and would be superior to all other priority pre-emptive operating systems. However, the methodology will have substantial benefits on the Windows platform.
