PKZIP 2.50 for DOS will use DOS Protected Mode Interface (DPMI) in

Windows 95/98, OS/2 and other DPMI supported environments to run 32-bit

code for better and faster compression performance. PKZIP 2.50 offers

full Y2K compliance. PKZIP 2.50 for DOS uses the classic PKZIP 2.04g

Contains: PKZIPr, PKUNZIPr, PKSFXr (ZIP2EXE) PKZIP 2.50 for DOS New features include full support of Windows 95 or Windows 98 Long File Names (LFNs). You are no longer limited to DOS 8.3 file names when running PKZIP in a Windows 95 or Windows 98 command line environment. You can extract, store and view LFNs inside a .ZIP archive without truncating the filename. PKZIP 2.50 for DOS uses the classic PKZIP 2.04g command line syntax, and can be used with existing batch files & scripts with no changes. Additionally, PKZIP 2.50 for DOS increases the file storage limitation from 5,000 to over 16,000 files stored in a single .ZIP archive. The ability to store more files in a .ZIP archive is a great benefit to anyone doing backup and restore operations using PKZIP.

For the advanced user, PKZIP 2.50 for DOS will use DOS Protected Mode Interface (DPMI) in Windows 95/98, OS/2 and other DPMI supported environments to run 32-bit code for better and faster compression performance. PKZIP for DOS also offers full year 2000 (Y2K) compliance.

PKZIP 2.50 for DOS consists of three main programs, PKZIP, PKUNZIP and PKSFX. All three of these programs are included with the purchase of PKZIP for DOS.

PKZIP: Creates the .ZIP archive files and has many options to allow you to control the way you compress files. PKUNZIP: Extracts files from .ZIP archives and has many options allowing you to control which files are extracted and where to place them. PKSFX(ZIP2EXE): ZIP2EXE adds PKSFX to existing .ZIP files turning them into self-extracting files. A PKSFX file is an executable file that automatically extracts files when run. PKSFX is convenient for transferring files to an end user not familiar with data compression. PKZIP 2.50 for DOS also includes: PKUNZIP Junior (PKUNZJR.COM): PKUNZIP Junior is a small stand-alone extraction program.

PKUNZIP Junior accepts the .ZIP file name on the command line and may optionally accept an output path. PKUNZIP Junior requires only 46K of memory. PKSFX Junior: There are two versions of PKSFX included with PKZIP for DOS. The "junior" self-extractor is designed to be as small as possible and the features are more limited. PKSFX Junior is able to extract to a path but can not be used on .ZIP files created previous to PKZIP 2 for DOS. PKSFX Junior can run on as little as 46K of memory. Features

PKZIP Long File Name (LFN) support for Windows 9x LFNs. Increased file storage limitation from 5,000 to 16,000 files. Select high speed or high compression with the default method of compression being a balance between the two. Store file attributes including hidden and system attributes and directory tree structures. An external configuration file allows you to keep PKZIP set up the way you want. Optional keyword encryption provides secure protection for sensitive data.* Authenticity Verification (AV) ensures a .ZIP files is not tampered with between creation and extraction. Edit or replace a .ZIP comment when updating files. Return and exit code in the DOS error-level variable allows for automated error reporting when used in batch files or by other applications. Create .ZIP files that span multiple diskettes. Spanning allows you to create extremely large .ZIP files, including backup copies of your hard drive. During the backup procedure, PKZIP will format floppy disks on the fly so there is no need to anticipate the number of disks needed ahead of time. Detect DPMI and execute code in 32-bit protected mode for better performance. PKZIP for DOS is Novell Network aware, providing enhanced performance when updating and modifying files on the server. (Advanced NetWare 2.0 or better required). Detect the exact type of CPU and EMS/XMS memory your computer is using. This allows PKZIP to use optimal compression while providing the greatest speed possible. Runs with 206K of conventional memory, only 108K if EMS/XMS is available. PKUNZIP Recognize all the compressed formats ever used by PKZIP. The latest version of PKUNZIP is always able to read all your .ZIP files, regardless of which version created them. Generates a 32-bit CRC (cyclic redundancy check) which is checked when extracting compressed files to ensure data integrity. Works well in batch files and makes use of list files and returns DOS error codes. Runs with 90K of conventional memory, only 86K if EMS/XMS is available. PKSFX Modified with PKZIP and viewed with PKUNZIP. Run from any drive or directory and can be renamed at any time. Can be used under any version of MS-DOS 2.0 or later. Adds only 14K to .EXE created .ZIP files. Requires 71K of conventional memory to run.
