Hi Folks!
I'm old PC/2 user (since the first version) and this soft was recommended for
me by the brazilian OS/2 user Sergio Queiroz. Now, after some experiences on
Warp 3.0 and Warp 4.0, I'm another advocate of PC/2. This week I downloaded
the new version, Beta 2.19a, and tested sucessfully this fine release from Roman
Stangl on my OS/2 Warp 4.0 FP6.

For running applications, PC/2
gives you more control by allowing manipulation of (moveable or sticky) windows
on the Virtual Desktop with an optional Overview window, usage of the WIN95
keys, support of (timer based) X-Windows style Sliding Focus and Dynamic Menuselection,
HW-Panning support for your ThinkPad users, a QuickSwitch and SessionBar window
to quickly switch between applications (besides displaying or managing the APM
and CPU (including SMP) status), enhanced window manipulation by using mouse
buttons 2 and 3, Advanced Marking of command processors, E and EPM editors,
Netscape, Lotus Notes and many IBM communication products like CM/2 and PersComm/3270,
an enhanced OS/2 Shutdown including Reboot or APM Poweroff, Titlebar Smarticons
adding functions like Rollup or Help, Security features to protect unwanted
modifications to PC/2, Environment Spaces to get rid of the CONFIG.SYS mess,
and a Online Automatic Update feature to allow PC/2 automatically inform you
and download news/enhancements/fixes.

About Beta V2.19a
by Roman Stangl
The following things have changed between V2.10 and Beta V2.19a (this is
a optimized build, that is it will not have a performance degration compared
to V2.10, though I always strongly recommend to make a backup!).
- Fixed PC2NET.C to compile under Warp Toolkit 4.5 for 16-bit TCP/IP protocol
stack header files (using TCPV40HDRS macro).
- Fixed that toggling the visibility of the Overview window's Titlebar
and SmartIcons required 2 times activating the Desktop dialog (flags had
been checked after deciding what to (un)hide in Dialog.c).
- Fixed that PC/2's Hotkey feature worked only for keyboards using the
same physical keys as US and German keyboards. Special thanks to Istvan
Kovacs for hinting me that different keyboards (a Hungarian in his case)
might use different physical keys to represent the same ASCII values than
US and German keyboards (the ones I have/know).
- Fixed that autostarting >10 items at exactly the same time could
cause PC/2 to run out of stack space. Stack space has been doubled and in
the online documentation a recommendation not to autostart >10 items
has been added.
- Fixed that thread health supervision displayed an incorrect message.
- Added optimization for Autostart feature to prevent unnecessary enumeration
of Popup Menu (NOPENDINGAUTOSTART flag).
- Added DLL entrypoint location to easy to localize Fixpack independent
trap locations in non PC/2 DLLs (Except.c).
- Added support to change colors of the CPU Performance Status area of
the SessionBar by dragging colors from the Color Palette onto it.
- Added an option to hide the grid in the CPU Performance Status area.
- Added checkpointing support (to allow me to find which PM API sometime
blocks the Working Thread rendering PC/2 unusuable).
- Changed the intervall for Autostart from 30 to 5 seconds upon user requests.
- Changed that for newly created Menuentries selecting Autostart does
not cause it to be autostarted automatically. IMHO this is more exactly
what Autostart means, invoking after PC/2 is launched.
Download the Beta
Just download the PC/2 V2.19a Beta archive, which does
not include the source code! And, please don't upload that archive to
any site , it is a Beta and nothing that should be downloadable everywhere.
You may encounter some problems - hey it's a Beta and thus I don't test every
aspect - at least you should be able to install it by booting to a command prompt
via ALT+F1 or a maintainance partition and manually copy all EXE and DLL files
(you have to rename DLx files to DLL though) over the existing installation
(again, please have a backup of PC/2 ready to undo that).

Can you help to improve PC/2?
There are a few things where my talents are limited and you might be able
to help:
- You probably know that I depend on your beta testing. I simply don't
have all the hardware and software to test every possible combination, but
with your testing a great deal of that can be covered. So, if you find some
incompatibilities/problems/... don't hestate to e-mail me!
- Every new release contains fixes, new features and some design changes
(well, as PC/2 started more than 7 years ago, some earlier designs had to
be replaced by more advanced ones). However, I tried to make it compatible
with 2.00 but if you find some inconsistencies, please e-mail me!
- In short words, graphics designer volunteers wanted! This is
your chance to help me brush up the graphics (icons) used by PC/2. I tried
my best, but unfortunately I have 2 left hands when it comes to graphics
;-)
