PartitionMagic 4.0 Available
|

Platforms: OS/2, Win31/95/98/NT, DOS, Linux
WARNING! PM 4.0 does NOT have an OS/2 executable.
It will create a DOS floppy that you can boot with and run PM. (And it still handles
HPFS partitions just fine.) A lot of people have been complaining to them and there
is a possibility that they will reconsider and create an OS/2 executable. Let them
know if you want it!
In Version 4.0, PowerQuest includes its new BootMagic software
for easily managing multiple operating systems, and expands PartitionMagic's patented
technology to support drives over 20GB. Other new features include a wizard-driven
interface, native Windows 95/98 and NT executables, batching functionality and full
support for Linux ext2 partitions.
PartitionMagic makes it easy to install Windows 98 or Windows NT. Users who want
to keep their old operating system in place while they get comfortable with the
new can quickly format separate partitions. Windows 98 users can even change existing
FAT16 partitions to the new FAT32 file system, and change them back to FAT16 if
needed.
"Computer users are a lot more sophisticated than they were just three years
ago," according to Scott Flinders, PowerQuest product marketing manager. "For
one thing, they aren't so ready to let go of their existing operating system until
they're sure of the dependability of the new one. Also, they're trying out both
NT and Windows 98. Or maybe they need two versions of one operating system. This
is all very manageable with PartitionMagic."
PartitionMagic, the leader in partitioning software, has set the standard for software
that allows computer users to create, resize and move hard-disk partitions on the
fly without destroying data.
"Hard-disk partitions allow users to organize and protect their data, reclaim
wasted disk space, and safely run multiple operating systems," says Flinders.
"With PartitionMagic 4.0's graphical interface and support for drives larger
than 8GB, it offers a complete solution for managing large hard drives."
Wizard functionality is a big plus in this version. Simple, step-by-step guides
now help users perform the most common partitioning tasks effortlessly. Wizards
and native executables for Windows 95/98, Windows NT and DOS make PartitionMagic
4.0 easier to use than ever.
The inclusion of PowerQuest BootMagic allows users to safely install, run and switch
between multiple operating systems. PartitionMagic will create and manipulate the
partitions in which multiple operating systems can reside, while BootMagic allows
the user to switch from one OS to another without worry of compatibility problems.
Users can now experiment with "what if" scenarios, then "batch"
all their different steps together. Prior to batching, partitioning was a step-by-step
process since each change to the disk needed to be applied before additional changes
could be made. Batching speeds up the partitioning process, allowing users to manipulate
the partitions to determine the desired partition structure before actually applying
the changes. Users can now store multiple commands and execute them in a single
operation.
Both DriveMapper and MagicMover are included in PartitionMagic 4.0. DriveMapper
updates drive letter references for partitions and peripheral attachments such as
CD-ROMs and removable storage devices. MagicMover moves applications and their related
files from one partition to another.
PartitionMagic 4.0 offers complete support for FAT16, FAT32, FAT32X, NTFS, HPFS
and Linux ext2 partitions. PartitionMagic continues to convert from FAT16 to FAT32
and vice versa, and from FAT to NTFS and HPFS. FAT32 comes preloaded with Windows
98 on new computers. For those consumers who find themselves with a FAT32 partition
when they buy a new drive, PartitionMagic can convert FAT32 partitions to FAT16
partitions so that users can continue to use other operating systems and utilities.
