OS/2 Security and Desktop ManagementStandard Edition Features:
Professional Edition Features:
Photo above shows Secure Desktop running on @Macarlos's Warp 4.0 The Secure Workplace for OS/2 is a computer security and desktop management system. The product will protect your OS/2 workstations from unintended changes and intrusions. The Security system enforces User and Group based permissions for files, directories and Workplace Shell objects. These permissions include read, write, open, execute, change attributes, delete, copy, move, rename, shadow, drag, drop, visibility, settings, and pop-up menu items. User access privileges are defined in the Workplace Shell settings notebooks. The Secure workplace for OS/2 V4 Professional Edition includes an Installable Security System (ISS) for IBM's Security Enabling Services for OS/2 Warp (SES). The ISS enforces file access permissions on a user or group basis. At system startup, The Secure Workplace presents the user with a sign-on window that prompts for identification and password. In this window, users can also change their password or shutdown the system. An auto guest feature is available when immediate start-up is required. The Secure Workplace provides a seamless interface for single sign-on to a network operating system or remote host. With this feature, users only identify and authenticate themselves once. The product includes seamless interfaces to Network Sign on Coordinator (NSC), User Profile Manager (UPM), and your own custom program. NSC & UPM are provided with OS/2 Warp Connect, LAN Server, and OS/2 Warp Server. NSC works with Novell Netware File Servers and remote hosts. The Secure Workplace allows administrators to configure user permissions such that each user sees a different view of the same OS/2 desktop. To enable multiple desktop management the product interfaces with the Traveling Workplace or third party desktop backup and restore software. With this open interface your options are unlimited. You can provide a personal desktop facility that creates a new desktop for each user, restores a user's desktop from an archive directory, or switches to one of many desktops that reside on the local workstation. When the user signs off you can save any changes. The Secure Workplace for OS/2 includes an audit trail capability. The audit trail tracks all user activities. Administrators can configure the product to record the audit information locally and/or remotely on a file server. File server based auditing, gives administrators the ability to collect audit information from multiple workstations in an enterprise network. The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4 includes a lockup screen Saver. This facility is activated after an administrator defined time-out. When the screen saver is activated, the user must re-enter the sign-on password to regain access to the workstation. The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4 allows administrators to disable the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination to prevent unauthorized rebooting of the system. The product can also disable the ALT+F1 key combination at system startup to prevent users from restoring an unprotected desktop or accessing a command prompt. The product also includes a Window List manager, a system shutdown utility, a Workplace Object Manager, and a Workplace Object Editor. Unattended installation and configuration is an important feature for installations with many OS/2 workstations. The Secure Workplace provides full support for these environments. The product can be totally installed and configured with a response file. In addition the User database and User privileges can be automatically updated from a network directory. The Secure Workplace V4 ships in Standard and Professional Editions. The Standard Edition lists for US$79.95 and excludes file access control and multi-desktop management. Users can add workplace backup, restore, and multi-desktop management by purchasing the Traveling Workplace which is sold separately. The Professional Edition includes multi-desktop management, file access control, and lists for US$120.00. Site licenses are available for both editions. |
Notes:
You will need IBM OS/2 Security Enabling Services (SES) and FIXPAK 17 or greater
if you intend to install The Secure Workplace Professional Edition on OS/2 WARP
Version 3.00. We recommend OS/2 WARP FIXPAK 26 because it contains SES fixes.
OS/2 WARP Version 4.00 includes the Security Enabling Services as an optional
component. Refer to the README.PRO
included in The Secure Workplace download for more detailed information
