Hi
All,
Sometimes these Flashes come rapidly after one another when
hot
news becomes available, but normally you do not hear
from us more than once
a week at the most ;-)
SP5 is officially out! First of all I
suggest to have a look
at the SP5 readme.txt, so you do not have to download
a 32Meg
file. That will answer a lot of your questions right away.
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/sp5/readme.asp
THE
FINAL VERSION IS AVAILABLE NOW ! This is the new URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/sp5/
I
just checked it, worked at 09:30pm Eastern Time. It has both 40-
and 128bit
encryption versions available.
The location I published yesterday is
definitely not the final
version. This was a Release Candidate, and was not
given out as
it still had a bug in it. It means that if you downloaded it,
you'll
have to grab the real SP5 again by now. A Release Candidate might
still have some problems attached with it, so better get the FULL
version that is now available.
In short, the SP5 is a combination of
a series of hotfixes and
can be split in several groups: printer and print
spooler bugs,
memory leaks (what else is new), security vulnerabilities,
user-mode
(access violation) and kernel mode (stop code) failures and RRAS
problems. It also contains some Y2K updates.
SP5 is really a Service
Pack, no major new features, just a bunch
of patches, meaning for us simply
less hotfixes to keep track of.
They said they would do it, and this _does_
make life a bit easier.
