New JDK!
FEATURE-COMPLETE VERSION OF
NEXT JAVATM DEVELOPMENT KIT
SOFTWARE NOW AVAILABLE

New Functionality in JDKTM Software Provides
Functionality Needed to Easily Develop Customized
Enterprise Applications.
PALO ALTO, CA - Sun Microsystems, Inc.
today announced the immediate availability of the complete
set of
technology that will ship in the next major release of the
JavaTM
Development Kit software, code-named JDKTM software 1.2.
The
release is the Beta 4 version of the JDK software and is
available
for immediate download at http://java.sun.com/products/jdk.
Key enhancements found in the Beta 4 release of the JDK
software include the JavaTM 2D API, support for Japanese
text, and
further tuning to the class libraries to provide greater
performance.
The Beta 4 release of the JDK software will be followed
by
maintenance updates approximately every four to six weeks
that
are designed to provide improvements in performance and
stability.
"Developers have spoken and their voices are reflected
in the
improvements in performance, interoperability, security,
and ease
of development that Sun has included in the JDK," said
Jon
Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of the Java
platform for Sun's Java Software. "The next JDK represents
Sun's
open industry effort to develop and provide developers building
Java applications with the exceptional functionality needed
to
create comprehensive cross-platform solutions for the enterprise."
The Next Java Development Kit
Scheduled for final release later this summer, the next
major
release of the JDK software provides developers with a rich
feature set of new class libraries and tools that make it
easier for
enterprise developers to create portable, distributed, mission-critical
applications. Increased functionality occurs in many areas,
the
primary being:
Performance. The next JDK software expands upon the
performance improvements provided in the JDK 1.1.6 product
by
including Symantec's Just-In-Time (JIT) 3.O compiler technology
in the core and by including the foundation for the JavaTM
HotSpotTM virtual machine, which further raises the performance
bar via adaptive optimization technologies. Currently in
an alpha
version released to Sun licensees, developers should expect
a
public beta release of the Java HotSpot technology later
this
summer, with final release scheduled this fall.
Ease of Development. Core to the next JDK software, the
JavaTM
Foundation Classes software (JFC) is a comprehensive set
of
graphical user interface (GUI) components (code-named "Swing")
and foundation services for building, displaying and printing
rich,
highly-customized user interfaces and graphics. JFC not
only
includes easy-to-use GUI components based on the JavaBeansTM
component architecture, but also the Java Accessibility
API, a
pluggable "look and feel" architecture, cross-platform
"drag and
drop" and the Java 2D API for advanced two-dimensional
graphics,
imaging and printing.
Security. The new security model featured in the next JDK
release
provides flexible access while solidifying greater control
over that
access. By extending the original "sandbox" model
with
permission-based access policies, applets and applications
written
to the Java platform can be given varying amounts of access
to
system and network resources.
Interoperability and Connectivity. The next JDK software
release
will enable Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) technology
to
run on top of the Internet Interoperability Protocol (IIOP)
technology standard. This will allow Java technology objects
to
access and interoperate with remote Java technology-based
and
non-Java technology objects. In addition, the next JDK includes
Java IDL (Internet Definition Language), to provide an all
CORBA
(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) solution for
seamless interoperability and connectivity to different
types of
applications and data in enterprises.
