Dozens of OS/2 users are asking me about the future of the OS/2 client
![]()
For several years I used OS/2 for all works that I perform with Personal Computers in the eremitery where I live. I made thousends of books printed in an HP deskjet. Books in portuguese language and in latin about theology. I'm monk of Saint Benedict Order and I use the Net to make my bread. I writed, illustrated and published books using Aldus PageMaker 5.0 on WinOS/2 because runs rather than on Windows.
With the help of a friend that I doesn't know personally, Elton Hartman Marks (http://www.goelton.com) I migrated from the paper to the Net and my jobs are changed. I followed using OS/2 but unfurtunatelly IBM has changed merchandising policies and now the OS/2 client is orphaned. The new version of OS/2 recently presented by IBM - Warp Server for e-Business - is a very specific server created for European market and has been projected to run Windows NT as a client.
The traditional OS/2 client - workstation used in SOHO activities - was abandoned by IBM. The owner of Stardock, Brad Wardell, has tried purchase the OS/2 code and has registered recentelly the domain <warp2000>. Unfurtunatelly have not news about this project and Stardock is making softs for Windows platform. Several very important developers like David Hamel, Boxer's author, and SemWare (softwarehouse of famous QEdit) was abandonned OS/2 projects.
Last May 3 Sun Microsystems was released the new HotJava Browser, version 3.0, with a completelly new interface and by the first time in HotJava Browser history Sun was not made the "generic version" for OS/2. An OS/2 user was writted an REXX script for HotJava for Linux will be used on Warp...
Also Bill Gates was changed Microsoft policies for his operating system and Windows NT also is dead. No more the expected version 5.0 like Warp have not more the 5.0 version. Now Windows 2000 Professional has arrived with server and workstation versions and Warp Server for e-Business simple have not more any client!
Well, I follow using OS/2 Warp 3.0 and OS/2 Warp 4.0 but I was forced to migrated to others platforms seeking for more efficiency.
With the release of StarOffice - a complete suite that runs at the same mode on OS/2, Linux, Solaris and Windows - I decided migrate to Unix and tried also Windows using NT. Finally I decided works intensivelly on Windows NT because the several applications that are available for this platform. Currently I'm using TSE32 Pro v 2.80b from SemWare and Boxer from David Hamel to generate and depurate HTML code; DeScribe 5.0 for write reports; Embellish 2.02 and Painter Pro 5.0 for images. I'm using several HTML editors here; StarEdit 5.0, HomeSite 4.0.1 from Allaire, WebExpress 3.0 from Jim Mayall (MVD) and Hot Dog 5.5 Professional Webmaster Suite (is simple fantastic!!!) from Sausage. I'm also using Dreamweaver 2.01 from Macromedia.
When I was working exclusivelly on OS/2 my tools for the web are very limited: Home Page Publisher and HTML Studio. I'm registered user of 212 OS/2 shareware applications and now I'm also registered user of dozens Windows applications, including the fantastic new GetRight.
I love OS/2 but the times are changing as saids Bob Dylan!
