The lastest editions of EMD2 on-line magezine featured articles about
Java programming by Fernando Lozano.

The first one (July edition) is about database access using the JDBC
core Java API. The samples were built for mSQL, using its third-party
100% Java JDBC driver.

The second one (August edition) is about Servlets, Java applications
that generate dynamic web pages (ex: eletronic commerce) and an
alternative to CGI or proprietary web server APIs. The samples use
mSQL and Lotus GoWebserver.

Both are step-by-step tutorials, teaching the main concepts,
installing and configuring the required software and then
implementing the programs. The tutorials were written for the OS/2
plataform, but all concepts and programming would be the same for
Windows, Unix, or any other plataform that supports Java, a
servlet-enabled web server (ex: Apache, Netscape) and a data base
wich provides a JDBC driver (ex: Oracle, Db2, Sybase, PostgreSQL).

All the software used can be freely downloaded from the internet and
freely used even on a modest PC (no need for Pentium 266 and 64Mb
RAM). That's teh reason I choose this toolset: anybody can pratice!
