Sundial Systems Corporation
announced today October 23 that Junk Spy (http://www.sundialsystems.com/junkspy/) is ready for download.
"It's a free prerelease version," says Randell Flint of Sundial.
"We're finished with our internal testing, and now we want everyone to
give it a try. Go straight to the Junk Spy page and get yourself a copy."

Junk Spy installs between your email program and your mail server
where it watches for, and filters out, junk mail.
"This is a hands-off answer to everyone's junk mail problem"
adds Rollin White, Junk Spy's Development Manager. "Here at Sundial we
constantly analyze new junk mail and we also continuously update a database
of known spammer sites. We do all of the logic enhancements and database updates
so Junk Spy is always current."

"Junk Spy's logic engine lets us do much more than an end-user can
with filters, since a mail program's filters can't access a database of clues
or do extensive logic" says Randell Flint. "And because Junk
Spy does all the checking based on Sundial's constant flow of database updates
and detection clues, there's no need for a user to create filters and then keep
them updated."

Watching For Junk Mail So You Don't Have To
You have discovered Sundial Systems' newest product. Junk Spy is an innovative application that monitors your email to identify and remove junk mail.
Junk Spy includes a comprehensive database of clues that indicate which messages are considered junk mail. Unlike conventional approaches to eliminating junk messages, Junk Spy's database is provided for you by Sundial Systems. Junk Spy's database can even be updated just like most anti-virus programs.
The final PreRelease of Junk Spy is now available for everyone to try! Please check the details on how you can download it and start putting Junk Spy to work for you.
This PreRelease represents the culmination of two years of development and testing. During that time, earlier versions were shown to focus groups, and their input helped significantly to improve and redesign the product. Over the course of testing, Junk Spy has been tested against tens of thousands of email messages. But we're not quite done yet and your feedback on the product is more than welcome.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to run and evaluate Junk Spy until such time as the product becomes generally available. Product availability and pricing will be announced during the month of November 1999.
To effectively eliminate your junk email, Junk Spy sits between your email program and your mail server. When your mail program begins to retrieve your email, it connects to Junk Spy instead of your mail server. Junk Spy then connects to your mail server and starts to download your messages. As it is receiving the messages Junk Spy evaluates them to identify potential junk.
Once Junk Spy finds a message it considers junk email, there are two options. The default is that the message header is flagged to indicate it's junk. You can use that header entry with your email program's filter capability to control what happens to it. You could delete it, move it to a specific folder, or take other action that your email program offers. If you don't want the message flagged, your other option is to have Junk Spy destroy the message completely. However, not all email programs can support this option and you do lose the flexibility of the filtering method.
Messages that are not considered junk email are sent to your email program untouched.
Junk Spy Uses Clues
Junk Spy uses a database of clues to determine which messages are junk email. The database contains words and phrases that are commonly found in junk email but not in your every day mail. The idea behind Junk Spy is that you should not have to worry about the contents of the database.
To support the "hands off" approach, Junk Spy also has the ability to receive automatic updates via email (of course!), so that the database can be kept up-to-date. This process is very similar to updating an anti-virus program.
In addition to the clue database, Junk Spy supports the Realtime Blackhole List (RBL). RBL is a database of mail servers known to facilitate or permit junk emailers. As the name indicates the database is maintained in realtime and provides an effective secondary mechanism to Junk Spy's clue database. RBL is maintained by Mail Abuse Prevention System, a non-profit organization.
The Best Program You'll Never Use
One of the best things about Junk Spy is that it works without you doing anything. Because Junk Spy is driven by your email program, you'll rarely interact with it directly. In fact to setup Junk Spy, most people will only have to make changes to their email program and do nothing other than start Junk Spy.
There are two important parts to the white section of the Junk Spy window. As you click in this space, Junk Spy will rotate through statistics about your mail - the number of messages, bytes, junk messages, junk bytes, and the ratio of junk mail. This is similar to the information area of OS/2's Warp Center that tells you how much space is free on your disk drives or how much of the CPU is being used. At the far right in the white area is a status icon which changes when Junk Spy is working to show you the different activities it is going through when retrieving and analyzing your email.
Junk Spy is designed to work with any POP3 email client. It has been tested and verified compatible with the following email programs:
If your email program is not listed here, don't worry. There is a good chance it will work with Junk Spy and general setup instructions are included.
Junk Spy (previously code named Kiwi) was the subject of the August VOICE Speak-up. Some of the information is dated, but the transcript provides additional background information on the product itself as well as the technology behind it.
