CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR EFFORT PAID OFF

Dear Java Lobby Members,

Two weeks ago we asked you to participate in the Java World poll on
Swing package naming, and you responded enormously to the request. The
next day almost 1000 people responded to that poll, a poll that had
garnered just 800 responses in its first week online. Your effort paid
off, and I want you to realize the direct connection between your
expression and its results. Your input really matters, and you matter!

Today Sun is announcing a new proposal for the naming of the Swing
package, one which I feel the majority of you will welcome and
embrace, and one which shows unequivocally that SUN IS LISTENING TO
YOU AND CARES ABOUT THE PRIORITIES OF JAVA DEVELOPERS!

Of course, there was more to it than just the JavaWorld poll, the Java
Lobby and others were communicating closely with Sun to help identify
a resolution that would have the greatest value to the whole Java
developer community. Still, the success here is yours, is ours, and is
Sun's - we all win together this time.

Sun's willingness to hear developer input and make a tough call in
response stands in stark contrast to the operating mode of other
well-known platform providers. In a moment like this I hope we can all
feel confirmed that our choice to support Java and unite in the Java
Lobby was a good one!

Bravo! Well done! Your input makes ALL the difference!

SWING PACKAGING PROPOSAL - SUN HEARS AND RESPONDS TO DEVELOPERS

Today, Sun Microsystems will publish a proposal on java.sun.com
regarding the Swing package name. The proposal is to name Swing
"javax.swing" for both Swing 1.1 for JDK1.1 and for the core package
in JDK1.2.

Sun makes the following points which recommend this proposal:
- Currently Swing can be viewed as a Standard Extension for JDK 1.1.
- Standard Extensions typically are placed in the "javax.*" name
space.
- A Standard Extension moving into core in the next reference release
of the JDK will retain its "javax." package name.
- Developer feedback has shown that one name for both JDK environments
is very important.
- Developer feedback has shown the name should make it as clear as
possible whether a package is core.
- Sun feels "javax.swing" fulfills both these goals.
- Sun would have preferred "java.awt.swing" for both JDK environments
but unfortunately that is not an option due to legal ramifications.

The Java Lobby applauds Sun for having responded to the resounding
input from the global Java developer community. We can only regard
this responsible choice by Sun as a positive sign for the future of
Java and for a genuine partnership between the Java community and the
Java platform provider.

More details will be available at the Sun JFC site:

HELP SELECT THE OFFICIAL JAVA LOBBY T-SHIRT - GALLERY ONLINE

http://www.javalobby.org/gallery1.html

Our hearty thanks go to everyone who submitted t-shirt designs to the
Java Lobby. We received over 45 t-shirt design submissions from
members around the world, and we have now placed nearly all of them
online in a new gallery format so you can conveniently view them. (a
few designs really weren't suitable for public display)

It's not too late to send in your own ideas. Just download the t-shirt
template image at http://www.javalobby.org/images/tshirts.gif and use
it to create your own Java Lobby t-shirt design. When you have a
design you like, just send the image to tshirts@javalobby.org, and
we'll post it in the gallery and gather member feedback.

Please let us know which designs you like best, and comment on them
in the forums. We'll soon produce some shirts and make them available
to Java Lobby members. All the submissions we receive will become the
property of the Java Lobby, but we'll be sure to send several shirts
to the members whose design submissions are chosen. Thanks for
helping!

THINKINGMEDIA PETITION ASKS NETSCAPE TO START JVM AUTOMATICALLY
(Included at the request of Java Lobby member Owen Davis)

With Communicator 4.0, Netscape changed the way the JVM loads.
Previously it was initiated when the browser launched so when a user
visited a page containing an Applet, both page and Applet loaded
quickly.

With Communicator 4.x, the JVM is only loaded the first time a user
visits a page containing an Applet. Loading of the JVM can take a long
time, even on newer PCs, which not only slows Applet loading, but also
holds up the the page containing it.

Delayed JVM loading is currently THE MOST IMPORTANT ROADBLOCK for wide
Java acceptance on the web. Groups affected include general users,
developers, content providers, search engines, agencies and
advertisers. It is essential for the adoption of Java that users do
not associate Java with system "freezes" and that providers do not
associate Java with drastically slowing website loading. Therefore, we
are petitioning Netscape to preload the JVM at browser launch.
