HYPER-CAFFEINATED: Weekly Perspective from Rick Ross
I was too busy this week to drink as much coffee as I need, aargh!
http://www.orensdailyroast.com/
Dear Java Lobby Friends,
My gosh, it is pretty obvious that JavaLobby members like to party!
The response to the JavaLobby JavaOne party announcement on the
website was nothing short of amazing, and we're definitely going to
rock Moscone - Thursday, June 17, 6PM-7PM in Room 300.
On behalf of all of us I want to thank Sun Microsystems (especially
George Paolini and Gail Mutoza) for their graciousness in providing
the space, pizza, beer, and soft drinks. I'd also like to extend our
thanks to IBM, Hewlett-Packard, 4thPass, Tower Technologies and others
who have donated door prizes for the JL bash. There are going to be a
lot of lucky members walking out of Room 300 with good stuff!
Did you save $300 on JavaOne registration yet? Sun and ZD have
extended the deadline for JL members to save $300 on JavaOne
registration until June 1. If you have already registered, you can
still get a refund for the difference. See the item below for details.
Warm regards,
Rick Ross

RSVP Today!: JL Fun @ JavaOne Party
http://www.javalobby.org/party.shtml
Space at the JavaLobby JavaOne party is really limited, and it is
filling up fast. We'll do our best to accommodate all who RSVP, and
we'll be working hard to try to obtain a larger space during the next
month, but there are no guarantees. Maybe we can convince Larry
Ellison to share the big room and hang out with the JL, we hear he
likes to party, too! If you are coming to JavaOne, if you want to have
a great time with fellow JL members, and if you want a chance to win
some of the great door prizes detailed below, just RSVP at:
http://www.javalobby.org/party.shtml
NOTE: You DO NOT need to attend JavaOne to come to the party!

Door Prizes!: JL Fun @ JavaOne Party
http://www.javalobby.org/party.shtml
Companies dedicated to supporting Java and the JavaLobby are donating
some fantastic prizes for the JL Fun @ JavaOne Party. If YOU work for
a vendor that can donate a great gift, please contact Mike Sick
(mailto:mike@javalobby.org)
with your gift idea. Those attending will
have a chance to win one or more of the following:
* Big Blue is weighing in big with a set of prizes that will make your
Java hot. 2 Workpads (Palm Pilots from IBM), 100 copies of Visual Age
for Java Enterprise Edition, a few hundred copies of Visual Age for
Java Professional Edition, and lots of copies of Visual Age for Java
Entry Edition. As well, there will be a couple hundred subscriptions
to Visual Age Developer Domain, an impressive online resource for
Visual Age developers.
* Tower Technologies has graciously donated a Commercial TowerJ
Starter Kit for their blazingly fast Java server environment. This
$5000 value includes all of the pieces needed to start developing
server side applications for any one of the following platforms-
HP/UX, Compaq Tru64 Unix, Solaris, WindowsNT (Intel or Alpha), IRIX or
Linux. see http://www.towerj.com
for more information.
* HP is providing two of its slick, slim Jornada's for JL members. The
Jornada is a WinCE based hand held PC for mobile computing. The
donated 820's weigh in at about 2.5 lbs and have a 10 hour battery
life. <joke>The JL member that wins this is obligated to take a month
off and do a nice Java port to the WinCE platform </joke>.

MSFT Making Java Noise Again

After a long stretch of silence, it appears that Microsoft is trying
to breath some life into its anemic Java efforts. Trying to cut
through the heavy spin, it appears that Microsoft will make its
J/Direct, delegates, and Java/COM technologies available to a wider
audience. By branding these technologies "open", Microsoft
appears to
be looking for wider adoption of its often controversial technologies.
Some JL members note that there are technology reasons for going the
Microsoft way, but most seem to think that its a matter of trust, not
tech.

jEdit 1.6 Released

JavaLobby member, Slava Pestov, has been gathering quite a following
with jEdit, a clean, powerful, open source text editor written in
Java. This new version features major improvements to the plugin
system and documentation. jEdit features syntax colorizing for 14 file
types (Java, C, C++, HTML and more), easy keyboard short cuts, auto
indent, bracket highlighting, and a beautiful Swing interface. See the
article, try jEdit, and rid of another win32 app from your daily
routine. jEdit is impressive.
