JavaTM BlendTM 1.0

New enterprise-level development tool speeds
development of database applications.
PALO ALTO, CA - Sun Microsystems,
Inc.
today announced the availability of the JavaTM BlendTM 1.0
software, a development tool that uses Java technology to
simplify
the complex process of building business applications that
can
access any database. The Java Blend software contains a
set of
powerful tools combined with a runtime environment that
are
designed to make it easy for corporate developers to build
business
applications that integrate Java technology objects and
enterprise
data stored in relational databases.
Databases and the applications designed to access them organize
data in different ways. The Java Blend development tool
understands these various database structures and automatically
translates and maps database records to objects and objects
to
databases. Enterprise developers can write programs entirely
in the
Java programming language to retrieve and modify data from
a
database as objects. This increases programming productivity
by
eliminating the need to understand different database languages
or
structural details - thus providing a simple, unified database
programming model.
"Java Blend delivers a key part of the Java enterprise
solution to
developers," said Joe Keller, director of development
environment
and tools for Sun's Java Software. "Now developers
have a flexible
tool that enables them to focus on developing rich enterprise
applications that work with any database without having
to worry
about how information is retrieved, updated and stored -
allowing
them to concentrate on business logic, not database programming."
With the Java Blend software, developers can build business
applications without having to write code in a database
language
such as SQL (Structured Query Language). The Java Blend
software automatically generates data that corresponds to
the
underlying database format. This process is called object-relational
mapping, and means that no additional programming is required.
"Java Blend takes weeks off development time by making
access
to relational databases fast and easy," said Steve
McClure, analyst
at International Data Corporation. "It solves the mismatch
between
object-oriented programs and relational databases by providing
a
seamless link between the object-oriented world of the Java
platform and the universe of commercial RDBMs that already
exist
in the enterprise."
To ensure that applications can access any database, the
Java Blend
software leverages Java Database Connectivity (JDBCTM) a
database connectivity technology provided in the Java platform.
The Java Blend software also conforms to the Object Database
Management Group (ODMG) standard for object/relational
mappings and object databases, allowing portability to object
databases as well.
The Java Blend software is extremely flexible and integrates
easily
with the market leading integrated development environments
(IDEs). It is also part of Sun's growing suite of open tools
that
enable development and deployment of enterprise-caliber
applications for the Java platform. Sun's suite of open
tools
includes: JavaTM WorkShopTM - a complete IDE for building
JavaBeansTM components, applets, servlets and Internet/intranet
applications; JavaTM StudioTM - a tool that simplifies creation
of
applets and applications by snapping JavaBeans components
together without writing code; JavaSafeTM - a source management
solution that coordinates and synchronizes members of a
development team; and SunTestTM - a complete suite of tools
for
writing and testing high quality applications that meet
the 100%
Pure Java certification standards.
The Java Blend software was co-developed with Baan Company,
a
worldwide provider of enterprise-wide business software
solutions
and consulting services (http://www.baan.com).
