Industry Focus

A key to Supply Chain success; complimentary article

The following excerpt was taken from the second issue of IBM Supply Chain
Connections:  Strategies and Solutions for Growing Businesses.

Baffled about becoming an ebusiness?  No wonder.  There's a lot to choose
from out there.  Richard Perrone, Americas Program Manager for IBM's
Industry Solutions Service, offers some advise. "There is much confusion
in the marketplace about how a growing business can leverage new
technologies."   Perrone suggests some questions to ask.

"How do I properly justify the ebusiness investment?  How do I determine
who our profitable customers are?  How effective am I at meeting growing
customer demands?"  Whether ebusiness, customer relationship management
or supply chain management, Perrone sees a common thread.  "It's about
improving business performance, not about technology."

Technical Hints and Tips

New! Garbage collection on Java 1.1.8 JVMs

eboss, John Howard, explains garbage collection on JDK 1.1.8 JVMs and
illustrates what can happen when garbage goes awry.  In Java** applications,
the programmer has explicit control of how objects are created but cannot
explicitly give back the memory these objects occupy when they are no
longer needed.  The process of garbage collection frees space that is no
longer used to store objects.  This paper gives a short description of
garbage collection, why it's needed, and how it works.

Multithreading in Java programs

Neel Kumar, software engineer for Terway.com, shows how multithreading
is made easy with Java's** language level support.  Using multiple
threads in Java is far easier than in C or C++ because of the language
level support offered by the Java programming language.  This article
uses simple programming examples to demonstrate the intuitive nature of
threading in Java programs and should prepare users to write simple,
  multithreaded programs.
