A SURE BET: SOLUTIONS '99 IN LAS VEGAS, JULY 19-22

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/solutions99/

It's the technical developer conference of the summer, and it's
happening next week! Solutions '99 offers the insight, education and
hands-on experience you need to develop lucrative solutions for the
age of e-business. You'll find over one hundred sessions focused on
VisualAge, Java, XML, Linux, JavaBeans, IBM WebSphere, MQSeries, Web
and Web application servers and much more.

While you're there, be sure to drop by the Hacker's Lounge to
participate in the JavaBean Brew contest! The odds are in your favor
-- just submit a finished JavaBean with source and you'll win a prize.
If your Bean is chosen as the best brew of the day, you'll win an
IBM WorkPad. And if your Bean is chosen as the best brew of the
conference, you'll hit the jackpot -- an IBM WorkPad, plus $600!

VADD IS FULL OF BEANS... JAVABEANS, THAT IS

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/javabean-tutorial/

Search VisualAge Developer Domain for "JavaBean" information and
you'll find over 200 items, including presentations, technical
articles and even actual JavaBeans you can download.

Recently we've added a new tutorial, "Developing beans for visual
programming," that will walk you through the basics of developing
beans in VisualAge for Java that can be used by non-progammers.
Imagine the increased potential for selling your bean, and for Java
programming in general, if any computer user could pick up your bean
and wire it into an application without programming.

INTRODUCING THE VISUALAGE FOR JAVA ULTRA LIGHT CLIENT

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/vajulc/

Up until now, the Java alternative for thin clients has been to use
custom Java applets. Except in the simplest cases, developing custom
applets can quickly lead back to a fat client solution. The VisualAge
for Java, Ultra Light Client (ULC) framework provides a small but
robust alternative to custom applets. ULC lets you build thin client
applications that use widgets, notebooks, interactive tables and
other features of graphical user interfaces not supported by HTML.
ULC is also much faster and scalable than a terminal server.

Note that ULC is not currently part of the base VisualAge for Java
product and is only available as a service offering from IBM.
Contact the VisualAge Solutions Group by phone at 919-543-8003 or
via email at tskyler@us.ibm.com for more information on deploying
this solution for your business.

VISUALAGE FOR JAVA AND CICS TRANSACTION GATEWAY VERSION 3.0

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/vajcics/

The IBM CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.0, for OS/2, Windows NT,
AIX, and Solaris, is a robust, secure and scalable gateway bringing
access from a user at a Web browser or Network Computer to business-
critical applications running on CICS servers.  Already available to
VisualAge for Java customers with Version 2.0, the CICS Transaction
Gateway is now available for download from the Internet for customers
who have the required licensing pre-requisites.

This paper provides an extensive overview of the CICS Transaction
Gateway Version 3.0. Of note to VisualAge for Java developers:
The CICS Transaction Gateway provides an implementation of the
IBM Common Connector Facility as a set of JavaBeans which integrate
well into an IDE such as VisualAge for Java. The CICS Transaction
Gateway also includes a set of Java EPI Beans for creating Java front
ends for existing CICS 3270 applications, without any programming.
This enables Java applications or applets to be created, simply by
the use of a tool such as VisualAge for Java, which enable existing
CICS applications designed for the use of 3270 terminals to interface
with the Web browser or Java enabled environment.

USINOR GETS READY FOR THE YEAR 2000 USING VISUALAGE MLE

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/usinor/

Usinor Group, with headquarters in Nantes, France, is one of the
world's leading steel manufacturers of highly technical products
serving the automotive, appliance, packaging and construction
industries. When the Y2K challenge first appeared as an IT issue,
Usinor called on IBM VisualAge Millennium Language Extensions (MLE)
to help them get ready for the Year 2000. With over 7000 COBOL
programs consisting of roughly 4.5 million lines of code, that was
no small task! MLE saved the company both time and money, by sizing
Usinor's Y2K challenge and prioritizing where to invest valuable IT
resources.

GROUPAMA INSURANCE BUILDS INTRANET WITH VISUALAGE PACBASE

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/r/99enews9/groupama/

Managing claims is a key activity for the GROUPAMA insurance company,
France's largest mutual insurance company. Today, its 2,900 agencies
are grouped in 24 regional funds and manage five million clients --
generating enormous volumes of claims every year. The faster claims
adjusters can process and fill these claims, the better they can
serve clients and reduce administrative costs.

Thanks to Télésinistre, a new intranet application built with IBM
VisualAge Pacbase, the productivity of claims adjusters is up and
the number of delayed payments is down -- reduced by 50% or more!
GROUPAMA was able to achieve these results and at the same time
leverage previous technology investments. Because its mainframe
legacy system was developed in Pacbase, VisualAge Pacbase was a
natural choice.

In today's international business world, the need to communicate in
many languages is continuously growing. Industries, administrations,

translation procedures. IBM offers a range of products to meet these
demands:

@ IBM TranslationManager -- the tool for machine assisted human
     translation for professional translators.

@ TransLexis -- the tool for company wide terminology management.
