The OS/2 Client Case

Here is the announcement:

"FreeOS?

Yes. This was the choosen name for a  new OS/2 clone. But why create an OS/2 clone? This question has several answers. The most important is IBM is not interested in promote and distribute OS/2 to the SOHO market, and we have no money to buy the expensive OS/2 Warp Sever for e-Business. Creating a clone, we will be able to  distribute it for free, and then we will have something distributed like Linux.  But the target is creating an OS/2 100% compatible OS.

Is that possible? I really don't know. Everything I know is that some day, one  guy called Linus Torvalds decided start a new OS, and 7 years later he had a  full-functional OS. His job was a little easier than "ours", because he based his  code on source codes of other operating systems, but we'll need start from  scratch. The good side is that we do not need recreate ALL OS/2. Several  pieces of OS/2 are already done by thirdy part guys, like the OS2LDR  (OS/2 Loader), CMD.EXE (4OS2.EXE) and even WPS can be almost entirely replaced. The most difficult part will be re-create the OS/2 Kernel (OS2KRLN). The OS/2 Kernel  clone will be created based on documentation and source codes released by IBM, and NO REVERSE ENGINEERING will be used. The new Kernel will be, as much as possible, entire in C, because we want the new version of it can be ported to another system, if the x86 was not the common proces sor in a few years, once this project is a long-term project.

Maybe we can have something in the OS/2 1.0 Kernel funcionality working in  4 or 5 years, or maybe never. We will try, but this is not a proof (or guarantee)  of success. We just don't know. Almost all of us (you can join us too!) don't  know even x86 ASM (needed for understand some basics pieces on several source codes) and don't know how OS/2 work in its low level either. But we know if it was made, it can be re-made. If you do not believe me, ask Linus Torvalds."
