Layered Frames System

Main application window divided into non-overlapping frames.
Frames can be created, moved and destroyed, allowing for
    full user customization.

The frames system allows for emulating well known user
interfaces such as MS Explorer and Norton Commander.

A single frame can contain several layered tools, such as
a File Viewer, a Folder Browser and a Tree Browser. Each
tool is represented by a tab used for its activation.

Individual frames in a layout can be maximized to the
full application window. This enables zooming in a
particular FileProbe tool for more detailed work.

Zip/Compressed Archive Features

Zip, Cab, Tar, Arj, Rar, Ace, Jar, Gz, and Z compressed
    archives are supported.

The contents of compressed archives are accessed by
    single or double-clicking the archive.

The built-in file viewers of FileProbe also work from inside
compressed archives. No need to manually extract the
files to temporary directories. FileProbe does this job
silently in the background for you.

Files inside a compressed archive can be dragged and
dropped directly from inside the archive.

New compressed Zip archives (and other types) are
created with a few simple keystrokes.

With FileProbe, it is easy to create self-extracting Cab
archives with nice GUI front-ends, enabling the creation
    of user-friendly self extracting modules.

The directory structure of compressed archives show
up in Tree Browsers. This provides efficient navigation of
    large archives.

With FileProbe, you can run Setup.exe style programs
directly from inside compressed archives. FileProbe silently
takes care of extracting required files.

FileProbe allows for accessing nested compressed archives,
by simple double-click navigation. An example here is a
Tar archive located inside a Gz archive, or a Rar file located
    inside a Zip file.

FTP Client Features

A powerful and intuitive FTP client is integrated into
FileProbe. There is no need to switch to a different
application and user interface when accessing remote
    FTP connections using FileProbe.

Advanced selection, sorting, searching and file viewing
tools work equally well in FTP folders as in ordinary
    local disk folders.

FileProbe can handle several concurrent FTP operations in
the background. You can upload and download FTP files,
while at the same time browsing and viewing files in
    other FTP directories.

FileProbe allows for multiple connections with the same
FTP site, provided that the remote server allows for that.

Using FileProbe, it is easy to control two remote FTP
servers on the Internet and send files between them
(so called server-to-server operations). With this
method, the content of files travels the most efficient
path between the two servers, it does not have to go
through the controlling FileProbe FTP client.

With FileProbe, efficient copy/move operations inside
FTP servers are possible (server-intern operations).

Folder Browser Features

The Folder Browser is the frame type where the files of
    a given folder are listed.

It is easy to select which fields of information are shown
and which are hidden (small, large icons, filename, file
    dates, file size, file attributes).

Files can be sorted in many ways, such as by name,
by size, by date, by type+name, by type+size, by type+
    date, name+numeric sorting, type+name+numeric sorting.

The level of detail for each field can be customized
(long/short form date, exact/approximate file size, ...etc).

When the date for a specific file is shown, one can
    select between:

The last file modification date,
      When the file was created,
The last time the file was accessed.

Zip archives (and other types) can be created by
dragging a selection of files to a directory, selecting
Compress from the drop popup menu.

When holding files with the mouse during a Drag&Drop
operation, one can use the space-bar to navigate up and
down directories. In this way, it is eays to locate the the
target directory during the Drag&Drop operation. It is also
    referred to as Drag&Jump&Drop.

Shell Features

Folders such as the Desktop, the Recycle Bin, Favorites,
the Control Panel (and many others) all represent different
types of services rather than plain disk storage. They're
    often called shell-folders.

Shell folders are conveniently accessed from inside
FileProbe, and all operations on shell folders are supported.

Drag&Drop to and from shell folders inside FileProbe.

Optionally, shell folders can be browsed as ordinary
disk folders (their actual file contents is then shown).

File Selection Features

The simple file selection dialog allows for selecting all files
matching a certain filename wildcard (*.doc, file?.txt, ...)
in a certain folder, or in a folder and all its subfolders.

The advanced selection dialog allows for specifying
selection criteria consisting of one or more of a filename
wildcard, a size interval, a date interval and a file
    attribute criterion.

The advanced file selection criterion can be applied to
a single folder, or automatically in multiple folders (a multi-
    folder selection).

A selection operation can be configured to select inside
multiple drives, multiple compressed archives, multiple
remote sites, ...etc (selection across storage type
    boundary).

The Selection Inspection dialog (keyboard shortcut F9)
allows for visually verifying that files are selected in
    multiple directories as intended.

Selection algebra allows for comparing selections of files
in two different directories and modifying these selections
if files are different or identical.

Selection algebra (keyboard shortcut Shift-F6) simplifies
tracking down similarities and differences between two
    directories.

File Search Features

A powerful file search engine is built into FileProbe. It can
search all folders accessible from inside FileProbe (local,
networked disk storage, compressed archives, remote
    FTP sites and file collectors).

A file search criterion consists of one or more of:

   A filename wildcard
      A file contents criterion
A file-size interval (files larger than, files smaller than)
A file-date interval (modified after, last accessed,
       created before, ...etc).
      A file attribute criterion
      A file contents criterion

A file contents criterion can be a plain word/sentence,
    a regular expression, or a hex/binary sequence.

One or more search processes can be in progress at the
    same time.

Output from the search process can be presented using:

A file listing (Folder Browser style)
A tree style output mirroring the folder structure of
       the search results.
Plain text output consisting of paths of the found items.

Search results can be saved and browsed at a later point.

Possibility to search across multiple selected drives.

Search the contents of any number of Zip files (and other
types of archives) for files matching a specific contents
    criterion.

Search for files in multiple networked computers or
    domains in a single operation.

Option for Silent Search enables performing background
file search operations where user interface operations
    (logins, error/notification dialogs,...) are suppressed.

Special Tools Features

  -
The folder synchronization tool enables synchronizing
two folders or two entire directory trees. You can choose
to synchronize all files, or only files matching a certain
criterion. You can sync for new (modified, created or
accessed) or large files. The exact difference between
two folders can be visualized with a single click.

  - The file attributes for a selection of files spanning one or
multiple directories can be modified in a single operation.

  - File batch renaming allows for renaming a large set of
files, possibly distributed over many directories. You can
use search/replace for strings in filenames and optionally
    suffix/prefix filenames.

  - It is easy to modify the file dates for a selection of files
    using FileProbe.

  - FileProbe can be used to apply a custom DOS command
to a multi-folder selection of files. This enables using the
powerful file selection tools of FileProbe, then processing
such selection with command line utilities.

  - With selection algebra, FileProbe can be used to track
down similarities/differences in different directories. This
feature can be used as a file duplication checker.

  - Text listings for drives, archives and FTP connections are
easily created. You have precise control over the formatting
of these lists, and they may span a single folder, multiple
folders, or selected items in multiple folders.

File Operation Features

  -
In all file operations, FileProbe can handle selections
    spanning multiple directories.

  - An example of a multi-folder selection is all files with
names matching the wildcard *.tmp on the C:\ drive that
have not been modified the last week.

  - File selections can span multiple Zip archives (or other
archive types). An example here could be all *.obj files
within all Zip files in all folders of a given drive.

  - For lengthy file operations, there is a customizable file
    operation completion notification mechanism.

  - File operation Log Windows provide detailed text logs of
file operations. They can be used for checking the success
of a lengthy file operation, and also for tracking down
    problems with file operations.

  - Silent file operations allow for suppressing all notifications,
logins and warnings that normally are shown as dialogs. This
is useful when doing lengthy background file operations.

  - Files within a single file operation can be handled in sorted
    or non-sorted order.

  - Possibility of copying/moving files from multiple directories
to a single directory (also called flat target).

Multi-Threaded Features

  -
Any number of concurrent copy/move operations can be
started from inside a single instance of FileProbe. The user
interface of FileProbe is not frozen during the progress
of lengthy file operations as is the case with most
    competing file managers.

  - While file operations are proceeding in the background,
you can continue browsing directories, archives and
    remote connections in FileProbe.

  - You can start and overview multiple FTP upload/downloads
and HTTP downloads from inside FileProbe.

  - While a number of file operations are in progress inside
FileProbe, you can still view text, image and web files
    using FileProbe.

  - You can launch several parallel file search processes from
inside FileProbe. The user interface remains responsive while
    these are in progress.

  - While large backup Zip archives (or other archive types)
are created (or large Zip files are extracted), you can keep
using FileProbe for routine file browsing.

Location Bar Features

  -
Drop your most commonly used folders and files onto the
Location Bar for convenient single click access.

  - Create project specific Location Bars holding shortcuts to
the important files and folders of a given project.

  - Popup Location Bars are opened from parent Location
Bars. This provides for a richer set of easily accessible
    shortcuts.
