Netscape Announces Continued Integration With
the Net With New Netscape Communicator 4.5 Client software.New Software to Provide
Smart Browsing, High-Performance Messaging and Flexible Roaming Access for Enterprise
Customers and Consumers; Netscape to Deliver Public Beta In July.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 17, 1998) -- Netscape Communications Corporation
(NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced Netscape Communicator 4.5, the latest version of
the market-leading client software for enterprise customers and consumers. Expected
to be available in a beta version from the Netscape Netcenter Web site in July,
Netscape
Communicator 4.5 will deliver on the superior quality required of mission critical
applications and will feature major product enhancements including Smart Browsing,
high
performance Internet messaging through open standards such as LDAP and IMAP, and
Roaming Access support for mobile users. For enterprises deploying Netscape
Communicator 4.5, Mission Control Desktop will provide enhanced centralized
management across multiple platforms.
"At Netscape, our vision is to best enable people to live and work on the Net.
Netscape
Communicator 4.5 pioneers this effort by introducing new integration features built
into the
browser. For example, our Smart Browsing technology harnesses powerful Web services
to make people's Net experience easier and more powerful," said Bob Lisbonne,
senior vice president of client products at Netscape. "With Netscape's current
installed base of 70
million clients, innovations like Smart Browsing, Pinpoint Addressing and Roaming
Access
all exploit the power of the network, and illustrate the exciting direction Netscape
is leading
our customers and the entire Net community."
Smart Browsing
Announced two weeks ago in conjunction with Netscape Netcenter 2.0,
Netscape Smart
Browsing will allow millions of Internet users to find information quickly and
easily
anywhere on the Net by seamlessly integrating a new generation of services, hosted
by the
Netscape Netcenter Portal site, with Netscape Communicator 4.5 client software.
The initial
phase of Smart Browsing will feature three core capabilities: Internet Keywords,
What's
Related and NetWatch.
Internet Keywords will allow users to access Web sites by typing regular words,
or simple
"keywords," instead of specific Internet addresses directly into the
Netscape Navigator
location bar. What's Related will provide users with a dynamically generated list
of links to
information about companies, services and products that relate to the site that
the user is
visiting. NetWatch will provide a mechanism for screening Internet content based
on two
PICS-compliant rating systems, RSACi and SafeSurf.
High-Performance Messaging
Netscape Messenger is the premier Internet mail client for users
at work and home. By
combining a new three pane interface and dozens of usability improvements with
performance enhancements, Netscape delivers a messaging client of superior quality.
Users will benefit from better message management as all mail folders and newsgroups
appear in a third folder pane for quick and easy access. In addition, fast and
accurate Pinpoint Addressing frees users from hunting for contacts in a separate
address book or corporate directory while ensuring that mail goes to the right person.
Designed from the ground up with standards in mind, Netscape Messenger is the only
client software that allows enterprises and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to
provide an
IMAP and LDAP messaging solution with the rich features that users expect. For example,
users can now take advantage of improved performance over a slow link, folder sharing,
multiple address books and read receipts. Also, migrating to Netscape Messenger
from
Eudora or Outlook Express is easy because Netscape Messenger comes equipped with
integrated import utilities for mail and address books.
Flexible Roaming Access
Netscape Communicator 4.5 introduces new flexible roaming support
for laptop, PDA and
multiple machine users so they can access their customized Communicator information
at
work, from the road or from home. For laptop users who travel, Communicator offers
the
best offline experience with one step synchronization of IMAP messages and replication
of
corporate directories based on LDAP. Users who telecommute, share machines or roam
between buildings at work can use Roaming Access to access their customized browsing
and messaging environments from different computers. In addition, with Netscape
Communicator 4.5 and Netscape Directory Server software, PalmPilot users can easily
take their corporate directories as well as mail and personal address books on the
road.
