The SETI OS/2 Warp Group

In Affiliation with Beyond.com

Hi OS/2 user! We received today July 18, 1999 an inform from Chris Graham about the SETI OS/2 Warp Group. You are invited to visit it.

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of
thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and
analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your
computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

Dear Carlos Andre R. Marcier,

Hello,

Just a quick note from me.

I've had a lot of difficulties with my email/web/ftp/telnet/updates/etc server
lately (you wouldn't believe it, two or three different bits of broken hardware
on the same box at the same time!). Well, it's been upgraded to a 400MHz PII
(from a 100MHz P), but it is currently in my office being watched, and that
means you can only get to it via a 56K. Sorry about that, but when it is up
and running smoothly, then I'll move it back to the remote site where it
normally lives, and then you can get it it at 256K.

Also, as a personal comment from me, if you have any machines sitting around
not doing much for most of the time, why not put them to a good use? The
SETI@home project is just for you! Basically, this is what it does:

                - Connect to the SETI@Home servers
                - Download a Work Unit (WU) (about 340K)
                - Spend 18+ hours processing WU, looking for any telltale
                  signs of extraterristrial signals.
                - Uploads the results to the SETI@Home servers and start all over again.

I consider this an excellent use of spare CPU time. There are already over 840,000
people participating, and they have spent over 30,000 YEARS of CPU time in processing
the data from the Arecibo radio telescope. Dr. Dirk Terrell (from the OS/2 Super
Site) has ported the UNIX version (command line only - but I like just watching
the numbers scroll by) to OS/2 (it requires EMX V0.9d). I have it permanently running
on serveral OS/2 machines under my control.

My personal stats can be found at:
        http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?name=chrisg@warpspeed.com.au&cmd=user_stats

I would also urge you to join the OS/2 Team, which can be found at:
        http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=OS%2F2+Warp

The mail SETI@home site can be found at: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ and
the OS/2 version can be found at: http://www.os2ss.com/seti/

-Chris
