Caldera Open Linux V. 2.3 Released

OREM, UT -- September 13, 1999 -- Caldera Systems, Inc., the "Linux for Business" leader, today shipped OpenLinux 2.3. OpenLinux 2.3 is the latest release of Caldera Systems' award-winning OpenLinux distribution. OpenLinux 2.3 provides remote mass installation capabilities and is Y2K tested to operate through the millennium changeover date and beyond.

"We were surprised and pleased at the demand for OpenLinux 2.2," said Ransom Love, president and CEO of Caldera Systems, Inc. "But even with the accolades and sell-through we weren't satisfied, so we asked the Open Source community, endusers, programmers, developers, and the press to give us more feedback. They did -- and we listened. OpenLinux 2.3 isn't just new and improved -- it's faster, easier and can perform mass installations remotely -- which is big news for IS directors and CTO's. And, thanks to contributions from partners like the Motorola Computer Group, it's become the 'Linux for Business' solution."

Motorola Computer Group is the first embedded computing platform company to ship OpenLinux 2.3 with two of its new series of products -- the SLX Series of network appliances for Internet, intranet and extranet networking applications, and the emS Series for telecommunications, office and industrial networking applications. "When shipped with our best-in-class embedded computing platforms, this version of OpenLinux -- an already robust and reliable product -- will allow us to provide the ideal combination of hardware and software needed to help our OEM customers increase performance, speed time to market and lower development costs," said Wayne Sennett, corporate vice president and general manager, MCG. "We've been working with Caldera Systems for some time now to assure that our products have the synergy necessary to provide these benefits, and we're looking forward to continuing this 'Linux for Business' collaboration as we bring high-availability CompactPCI embedded platforms to the Linux solution set."

OpenLinux 2.3 is based on the 2.2.10 kernel and includes an improved LIZARD (LInux wiZARD) install with faster autoprobing. LIZARD was the first point-and-click graphical install of Linux and it revolutionized Linux on the workstation. LIZARD detects many more sound and video cards so that both audio and visual are automatically configured without user intervention. LIZARD can now run after the installation to reconfigure video resolution or other configuration options.

Business Solutions: Pre-configured and Unattended Installs Pre-configured install options include Home Computer, Web Server, Business Workstation, Development Workstation and Network Server. With the custom configuration option, the new Linux Unattended Installation allows the enduser to have completely non-interactive, script-based installs. The Unattended Install feature combined with LIZARD's remote capabilities, makes network administration even easier for systems integrators and channel partners with mass installation needs. VARs can now replicate custom configurations to meet the needs of multiple markets. Application Enhancements

OpenLinux 2.3 contains several updated features and commercial applications. Commercial applications are included on the Windows Tools and Commercial Packages CD and can be installed with the ease of a browser link click.

They include:
