Magnus Olsson Releases
Astrolog for OS/2

Programmer
Magnus Olsson, author of famous WarpCalc (I, @Macarlo am registered user of WarpCalc and it is my default PM and command line calculator for all jobs!) just releases Astrolog for OS/2 and uploads the zipfile (astrolog.zip, 462,18K) on Hobbes today September 18. I don't like astrology and condemn it because I'm catholic monk. But the program it's very interesting and I suppose it is the first serious astrological soft for Warp Initial port of Astrolog 5.30 to OS/2 Version 0.90. Astrolog for OS/2 can be used to calculate all sorts of astrological charts including standard natal charts for personality profiling.

"Astrolog is a classic when it comes to astrology software, not only is it 100 percent open source software, but it is also the most complete, and most flexible astrology calculation program ever made. Thanks to the original author Walter D. Pullen is Astrolog already available on multiple platforms, including DOS, Windows, Mac and Unix. The fact that Astrolog is open source software has also made thisindependent port to OS/2 possible" -saids Magnus Olsson.

Version 0.90 of Astrolog for OS/2

This port of Astrolog 5.30 for windows to 32-bit OS/2 compares to the windows version as follows. A plus sign in front of an item indicates functionality not in the original but in Astrolog for OS/2, and as you might have guessed a minus sign precedes original functionality not found in this release.

- Printing
- Comparison charts not possible
- Scribble (simple drawing using the mouse)
- Arabic parts*
- Biorythm*
- Basic interpretations*
+ Longer filenames can be used (especially useful for chart files)
+ Time and dates in the ISO format, this is the default (references
to GMT has also been replaced with UTC).
+ Summary in the sidebar for graphics charts giving instant
clues for basic personality profiling (dominating element,
mode and sex).

Items followed by asterisks have been deemed insignificant or even offbase by Olsson. If you miss these you can always add them yourself as the source code already is or soon will be readily available, both original and OS/2.

There's probably even more functionalty missing, so please let the Author know! Also don't hesitate to tell he about any other improvements you'd like to see.

Note that there's a reason for the version number 0.90 and that this is a fairly straight port of the windows version. OS/2 features like Warp 4 notebooks, user profiles and drag and drop will be added along the way. I know that both looks and performance can be greatly improved, but specifics are always welcome.

The following will be added or improved along the road towards v1.0:

* Printing
* Multiple charts buffers (for quick access and comparison charts)
* Scribble (simple drawing using the mouse)
* OS/2 bitmap save
* OS/2 meta file (picture) save
* Text charts using MLE control for decent performance
* Graphics charts optimized for OS/2 (faster redraw, scroll)

Astrolog for OS/2 system requirements

Any system running Warp 4 or alternatively any 32-bit OS/2 system
equipped with a 486DX CPU or higher.

The source code for this version was compiled and linked using
Watcom C 10.6 and the resource compiler found in the Warp 4 toolkit.

Where to get Astrolog for OS/2

This independent port of Astrolog 5.30 to OS/2 is archived at the public OS/2 shareware and open source software archive Hobbes:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu

Here you will not only find the binaries for this version, but also the complete source for everything included in the end user package.

The Astrolog homepage

Ephemeris and general info about Astrolog as well as links to related sites can be found at the Astrolog homepage:

http://www.magitech.com/~cruiser1/astrolog.htm

Here you will also be able to find the original source for Astrolog as well as binaries for Windows.

Ephemeris

Ephemeris files are not required but provide more accurate positions.

The anonymous FTP site ftp.magitech.com (or magitech.tcastle.is.net), maintained by J.H. Trott has all ephemeris files available in the
subdirectory /pub/astrology/astrolog/ephem.

The files are in groups with xx being a number indicating the time period covered. The three files LRZ5_24, CHI_24, and CPJV_24 cover the current and 21st centuries. Copies of these files are already in the end user package.
