You think in words and pictures and numbers. Wouldn’t it be great to have one software program that works pretty much the same way—effortlessly combining the power of words and pictures and numbers—so you can use it in all three modes at the same time, without having to switch applications?
The latest version of AppleWorks — the most
popular program on the Mac — is really several applications in one. It gives
you six core capabilities (and a number of combinations thereof): word processing,
spreadsheet, database, presentation, drawing and painting. AppleWorks 6 works
the way people think and work—and that extends the capabilities of the people
using it.
Like Microsoft Office, AppleWorks is a collection of integrated
applications. They include word processing, database, spreadsheet, painting
and page layout. In version 6.0, Apple has replaced the communications module
with one for making presentations.
AppleWorks is a compactly designed and elegantly engineered multifunctional
program with a remarkably small memory requirement. Best of all, AppleWorks
doesn’t take up nearly as much hard disk space as six applications, and needs
nowhere near as much memory.
AppleWorks never was a powerhouse with advanced features equaling those of Microsoft
Office. But it has always been the easiest program of its kind to learn and
use. That hasn't changed with version 6.
What Apple has done, though, is add a lot of the power features that are already in Office. Among them are an interactive outline mode, a thesaurus, document password protection and seamless integration with the Internet without the need for a Web browser.
You can also draw tables within a document, auto-save your work and tap in free to a Web database of more than 25,000 images and 150 templates. Images, video and sound clips and photos can be dragged and dropped into any AppleWorks document.
What you'll notice first about AppleWorks is the look. It has been redesigned to take advantage of the improved graphic capabilities of Apple's latest operating systems.
The program now has a series of floating toolbars. They are tabbed and feature sharply rendered icon representations of documents, functions and images.
The toolbars are highly customizable. You add or remove icons
through drag and drop. Make the icons big or small, and orient your toolbars
vertically or horizontally
